Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP! You will then proceed to Lesson #2 and so forth. Here is the link to the entire 400 plus Lesson Library. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:Techniques

Here is the link to your own PRIVATE HOUSE OF PAIN!...Er I mean.. SHRED!

Hey Sarge!
So here is Lesson 1 from the Shred Bootcamp!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Feb 13 2018, 04:45 AM

Heads Up!!! It's the FIRST MISSION From the G Man!!! Great to see you swinging the club!!!!! A great first effort here. Solid tone and technique. These first few missions are really just to get you used to recording yourself and getting your production process smoothed out. Things don't get to crazy til you get past the first few. You should have zero problem with these and you can go ahead and do more than one at a time if you like as I think you are more than ready to be further up the food chain on these. Let's Debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*LEFT HAND KILLING IT: Good Fretting, clean notes.

*RIGHT HAND KILLING IT: Good palm mute, no string noise, good strikes

*BOTH HANDS KILLING IT: Right/Left Synch is spot on!!

In other words you just KRUSHED it and ..

LEVELED UP!!!!

Welcome to the fight Soldier!! Here is your first Mission Badge!!

Can't wait for your feedback!

CONGRATS SOLDIER!!!! yet again, you KILLED IT!!!!! Let's debrief...

Very nicely done soldier. This is exactly what I was looking for Stick a fork in it, it's done! You showed very solid technique here despite not using much gain. Sometimes folks will go a bit heavy on gain to hide bits and smooth out the rough patches. An old salt like me can always hear the wonky bit though Your timing is very good throughout. I think you are more than ready for what's next. Very soon, I'm going to start asking for "MULTIPICKING" which is picking each note in a given drill twice or more, instead of once. But we will get there in a bit. For now.....

MEDALS OF HONOR

1.)Solid Hand Synch
2.)Tight right hand control
3.)good planted palm mute

Congrats Soldier, you just ...

LEVELED UP!!!

You can get some advance practice on MULTI PICKING by going back through Mission 1 through 3 and just pick each note twice in a given pattern, then try to pick each note 3 times, then try to pick each note 4 times.

Also thanks for your feedback Sarge!
It is true that I am more nervous when I am recording...I''l try to be more relaxed in general...
And of course I intend and hope to do a lot of RECs as you suggested!! smile.gif

You are kicking butt and taking names Soldier!! Keep it up! The more you play on camera, the easier it will get. It's natural to tense up a bit when the camera is rolling just takes some time and getting used to it. After a while, it will be no different than when you are not being recorded. Of course, this assumes that you will record yourself a LOT which is something I suggest. I'd say record practice sessions every time you practice. Even just a a small chunk of the session. Watch the playback and look for things to improve on. Folks that stay stiff when video is rolling usually just don't spend enough time recording and watchingthe playback. So get on it Soldier! smile.gif Add some Multi Picking in there as well so you can see/hear whatt thats sounds like on playback and BAM you are on your way to being a MONSTER player!

Well Fought Soldier!! This is what I like to see. Aggressive, steady, plowing through, kicking ass and taking names. You are more than capable of doing multiple lessons. Keep this up and you'll be knocking on the top spot in no time!!! These are all done well. Let's debrief!!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*PICKING: Solid picking technique on all of these. Your Alt Picking is coming along nicely!!!!

*MUTING: Very good job muting. IT's very easy to slack off on ones muting while concentrating on fretting and picking. EVERY SINGLE ONE of these missions is designed to force you to focus on your muting, no matter what else is going on and you have!! Nice!

*LEAP FROGGING: Doing multiple lessons at once is a great way to make much faster progress. I don't often have students that can get through many lessons at once and get a level of mastery of each. You manage it quite well. I say keep going, you can handle it!

In other words, you just killed it and ...

LEVELED UP!!!

Keep it up! I'll check out your rec!

Just Killin it!! #7 is a complex bit that requires very fine finger articulation and alternate picking skill as well as string traverse. If you miss a single note, the entire thing falls apart an you have to start over. You played it all the way down the neck without a single slip. Nice!

#8 Takes things a bit further and requires a fret change which makes it all the more easy to mess things up at some point along the way. Not here though!! You again run it all the way up the neck and never lose track of where your fingers are needed to bee and you keep a solid pace the entire time.

#9 forces you to think quickly as the fret changes come about more quickly as you are spending less time as each spot. It's each to get a note or two confused on this one as well and it sticks out like a sore thumb when one is out of place. Per usual, you nailed them all and kept pace, didn't rush or lag, and had good muting the entire time.

This series of Missions is designed to get you to focus on precise playing. You nailed all of them. You keep your playing tight, everything nice and clean, no flubs or slip ups. Well fought Soldier!! Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*PACE: Never rushing, never lagging, solid as a rock.

*PRECISION: Every note in place, not a skip or flub to be heard.

*AGGRESSION: Always on point, always pushing the edge. Nice.

In short, you made short work of it and .....

LEVELED UP!!!!

KILLING IT!!! THIS ..... IS......SPARTA!!!!!

10 is a BEAR of a finger twister. It forces your hand to consider placement of each and every note, every finger. If you miss one note, the entire thing is ruined and you have to start over. Being able to play it from start to finish is not easy and you really show a lot of dexterity. I know it's not easy to learn this pattern. If it's new to you, it's twice as hard. You tore through it like a pro! Score!!!

11 this one takes number 10 and then forces you to make a big stretch and stick the landing with your pinky!!! Not only did you stick the landing with your pinky, you went for broke and MULTI PICKED IT!!! A very complex pattern indeed. Not one note out of place, solid mute the whole time. Double Score!!

12 is all about sliding all the way down the neck and keeping control. You kept it high and tight the entire time and used all the strings without missing a note. This Mission is all about getting you used to running down the neck. All of these skills will be combined in future lessons so its great that you are getting solid results from each and every one! Triple Score!

13 is about taking that complicated inversion pattern that you learned in lesson 10 and then running it all the way from high string to low string and back again. just like 10, it's a very complex note sequence that you have to memorized in order to play it at all. Many folks struggle like crazy with this one and you not only crushed it, you multi picked it!!! Quadruple Score!!

14 is back to getting used to running all the way down the neck. This is building on what you did in lesson 12. Hopefully by now you are seeing a pattern of information and learning starting to unfold. You get a new bit of technique, and then it gets modified and added on when it's returned to. Sometimes, this will be one Mission after another, sometimes, it will be a misstion gap of two or more before returning to the original technique. All of these techniques build on each other as you go so that you are able to play more and more complex lines. You are doing great on all of these and didn't miss a beat. MEGA SCORE!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*MUTE OF THE GODS: Solid as a rock palm mute for each and every mission!

*STRIKE LIKE LIGHTNING: Each pick strike is solid and well placed. Pick strikes are the foundation of an enormous amount of playing the instrument.

*SYNCHED AS IF CHAINED TOGETHER: Your right / left hand synchronization is spot on. This is a HUGE part of every lick you will every play.

In short, you are displaying a GREAT level of technique and making killer strides in your playing. Also you just....

LEVELED UP!!!!

ALSO YOU JUST EARNED YOUR DOUBLE CHEVRON BADGE!!!!!!

Soldier, you are working your tail off and it shows! Great work here. I don't think I've ever leveled anyone up this many ranks before, but honestly you've earned it. Each and every one of these takes time to complete properly and I'm really not sure how you were able to do them all in a row without going without sleep!! But either way nicely done! You have a great work ethic for sure and that more than anything else is what is really takes. You've got to work hard, and you've got to keep going. You don't show any signs of stopping or slowing. Keep it up Soldier!!! Let's debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*SHEER EFFORT: You knocked out a huge amount of work here. A huge chunk of quick licks and several Bootcamp Missions all at once. I've honestly never seen anything like it. Well done!!

*AGRESSION: I love the way you are digging in to these. Each one explores a new bit of technique that lets you build on the last and that's exactly what I see you doing. Especially when you were doing your guitar solo. Great to see you putting all of the lessons to good use and making music!! After all, that's the entire point of all of this hard work.

*FOCUS: I can see your level of focus on each drill. You are intently dive in to each drill and work through it til you have it right. keep this up and you'll make it all the way through and learn a TON in the process!!

In other words you just..

LEVELED UP!!!

Soldier, you are FORCE OF NATURE!!! I have to say I'm very impressed with your consistency and your discipline. It's these two qualities that I've noticed in players that I have seen make great gains and turn in to killer musicians. You are burning through these like crazy. It's impressive. I don''t usually level up a Soldier in chunks of 5 but you are no ordinary Soldier. Uncommon drive and determination merits uncommon advancement. So let's Debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*PALM MUTE: This basic technique is something that keeps many folks from ever getting to where they really want to be as a player. You will notice many folks using socks through the strings/sring mute wraps below the nut/etc. in an effort to reduce string noise. Sadlly, this usually means the player is playing beyond their ability to mute the strings and is having to rely on something to mute for them. Not the case with you. You have a very solid muting technique and I have yet to hear any errant string noise. Keep this up!

*RIGHT HAND POSITION: Another basic technique that keeps many players from advancing. You may notice some players let the right hand drift up and down as they traverse strings. This can leave strings open for unwanted string noise/resonance/etc. Not so with you. You have a very solid right hand position that stays planted on the bridge. This will serve you well as you continue in boot camp and it will serve you well as you develop your own personal guitar "style".

*NO "OVER PICKING": Sounds like a simple concept, but I've seen it prevent many players from progressing. You may notice some players over commit to a single pick strike and let the pick tip go to deep beyond the strings. Not so with you. You are striking at just the right point to excite the string, but not going beyond that to allow the strings to catch your pick and make you stumble on string traverse (up/down the strings). This too will serve you well not only in bootcamp, but as you apply all of these techniques toward expressing yourself with the instrument.

In short you turned the Mission in to MINCED MEAT and TORE IT UP!!! and you just...

LEVELED UP!!! (only one Mission away from your next Chevron!)

You are showing some serious promise as a player and some serious dedication and discipline. You are a case study in the effectiveness of sheer determination and hard work. I've always said, innate talent isn't the key to being a great player. It's sheer determination that makes the difference. Let's debrief!!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*PRECISION: Displaying a precision well beyond what I expect at this stage, you are nailing it to the wall each and every time. Impressive display of technical ability and a truly impressive amount of progress.

*TECHNIQUE: It's all there in every mission, the solid palm mute, centered on the bridge, the clean strikes when picking, the lock step hand synch, the lack of string noise, no dead notes, no missed frets. Impressive.

*PINKY POWER: I see you making great use of your pinky. This is something many players struggle with for years. You are already using it like a pro. You stick the landing with it, give strong fretted notes, and have a great stretch/reach. Nice.

You are playing well above what I expected to see from you given how briefly you've been forging a path of Blood!! Keep this up and you'll be the TOP DAWG in Bootcamp as well as Quick Licks. You bested every single Mission AND you just earned the THREE CHEVRON BADGE. I have not given many of these out. You've made it past the LESSON 25 Milestone and are headed to 50 with a vengeance!! Nobody has every made it much past 75 and NOBODY has ever made it to 100. I think you may be the first!! In other words you just...

LEVELED UP!!!

Keep it up!

Keep it up SPARTAN!!!! You have some great momentum and are making great strides in your playing!! If you can squeeze it in, hop in to GABES FUNK Collab! The collabs require you do create licks based on what youve learned and it's a great way to work on your EAR training in a musical context.

BOOTCAMP MISSION 33!!!

Yet another example of our Spartan just KRUSHING the Mission. Let's Debrief!!!
This one requires a pretty big stretch and it requires you stick the landing with the PINKY and it requires that you traverse every single string up and down the neck. There is ample chance for string noise in this one. If your muting is off even by a little bit, this will become a string noise mess. The good news is, you RAWK so there is no string noise!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*TRAVERSE: Smooth as glass. Over every string on the neck, even on the bit where you have to go back and forth on strings. Never missed a note.

*MUTE: This Mission is built to show you any gaps in your muting and if there are any gaps, string noise will be everywhere. Your mute is solid as a rock and I don't hear any unwanted string noise.

*SYNCH: This Mission requires you to play fretted and open strings in rapid fire succession and keep it clean. If your hand synch slips up, you will get random notes. Not here. Synch is spot on the entire time.

You nailed it with the PINKY and stuck every landing, had great control over your stretch and picking, it's all there! You just..

LEVELED UP!!!!!

Talk about a Quantum Leap!!! I just realized that you put a wad of Missions in a single vid! That's a new thing for boot camp, but you pulled it off so I'm cool with it smile.gif Let's debrief!!!...

MEDALS OF HONOR

*PALM MUTE FROM HELL: Despite the various challenges to your muting presented in this lessons, you didn't waver. You kept your hand planted in the right spot the entire time. No string noise to be heard. Nice!

*PICKING FROM HELL: There is a LOT of Alternate Picking in these drills. As there are no gaps, any mistakes show up big time. Each time you heard a misstake, you went back and played it again to make it right. Good ear and good playing!

SYNCH FROM HELL: Hand synch is critical in all of these drills. That too sounds out each time there is a miss. I didn't hear your hands lose synch once. Your right and left hands are working well together.

In short you clearly have a good handle on all of the techniques represented in this batch of lessons. I'm iimpressed that you were able to memorize this many at one time. This is a LOT of various drills to put to memory. You must have a great Memory, but you are Doctor so I should have expected it!!

In short you just..

LEVELED UP!!!!! (And got anothe chevron in your badge!)

43 - 45

Well fought Soldier! This is a fine example of working your brains out! Each time you hit a snag, you start over and make sure it's done right. This batch if full of things to make a player trip up and you worked through all of them. Let's Debrief!!

MEDALS OF HONOR

*DETERMINATION: Every time you miss a note or don't play it right, you go back and try again and make it right. Persistence in the face of adversity.

*STEADY PACE: You are listening to your "inner Metronome" this is something that takes a while to develop. Your playing is very even and smooth which is the point of playing with a metronome in the first place.

*MEMORY MACHINE: Being able to remember all of these patterns, one after the other is impressive. Keep it up!

In other words you just ..

LEVELED UP!!!

New lesson pack Sarge!

Well Fought Soldier! Let's take these one Mission at a time so i can give you better feedback. Here we are at glorious MISSION 47. This one requires you to work on open string licks as well as go back and forth inside of scale shapes. It's easy to get one confused with the other. Some student find their fingers lifting off the fret board during the back and forth bit just because they have the open string bit burned in to their heads in order to remember it.

You did quite well on both. Neither one is easy nor are they meant to be. It's to get you to be able to switch gears in an instand and switch from open note solo licks, to fretted scale solo licks, without having to worry if you are going to confuse the two techniques.
Zero chance of that here! You have a strong command of both. I'd say take this open string lick and try it on every string on the guitar, then run it in reverse!!! Up the neck instead of down. Your brain can work out the note order. You are a smat guy! This is just something to try at home, it does not impact your grade today. But if you record it I'd love to see it smile.gif

Let's Debrief!....
MEDALS OF HONOR*Eric Johnson Would be Proud:! I based that open string lick off of Eric Johnsons style of play. He uses lots of very odd shapes and lots of familiar pentatonics as well. So I took a known pattern and changed the notes around a bit to make it confusing. You saw right through it. Nice1
*Flying Fingers: You seemed equally at home in the scale shape where you had to run back and forth. Many folks get a note confused and have to start over. Not so here, you burned all the way through it. Nice!1
In other words you just ..
LEVELED UP!!!!
