C Tuning, What strings are recommended?

I'm about to change the strings of my Les Paul Studio and I want a really heavy, low and fat sound so I'm thinking of C tuning. But before I hurry to the music dealer I wanted to get some input regarding different strings. So does anyone have any input regarding what to get for a C tuning? - String gauge - String composition - String "brand" And furthermore, do I have to adjust the guitar in any way if I go with a new string gauge? I read an article regarding this we they recommend to: * Enlarging the nut slots to accommodate for the larger string size bullet * Tightening the rod to counteract the increased tension on the neck bullet * And, possibly, lowering the saddle if there is enough difference to the tops belly But is this really necessary? You can tighten the rod, but being that your strings are big enough to accommodate the right tension and balance of the tuning being low, then you don't have to. Yes you will need to setup your guitar for that a bit. Tune your octaves and the action. The part "Yes you will need to setup your guitar for that a bit". What does that really mean? I have extremely limited skills when it comes to "hardware" tweaking of the guitar. Thanks for the input! I will go with 12 and see what this does. One more thing Is the brand of the strings important? I have always used Ernie Ball strings but the last time the local music dealer recommended some other strings and sure, they were fine as well but I couldn't really tell any difference. Different brand has different string construction method although they may use the same materials. Try it and you will notice the difference in tone and playability. Well, simplified: say you use 9 gauge for E-tuning, to have equal tension when tuning down, you need to Increase string gauge. So when tuning down as low as C, the strings wioll have to be at least 11, certainly 12 gauge, as already stated, to remain somewhat equal tension as before. It's hard to get EXATCLY the same tension on both sides of the neck (strings vs. trussrod). That's why you might need to turn the trussrod just a bit. Messy eeehh?
