Hello all!!!
I am a 26 year old Structural Engineer from Florida (USA) and have been playing guitar since i was about 14 years old. The sad thing is that I have met many first years students that are better than me :-( I started performing for my local youth group (for those that don't know it's a bunch of church kids that get together weekly) after only about a year of playing and that was both good and bad. Good - I had to learn basic chords and how to sing and play very quickly. Bad - i never got past basic chords :-( So after years of never progressing I got fed up and put the guitar down but couldn't leave it forever. So I am back and this time deciding to take it seriously! That's why i joined GMC! I could use some tips on where to start in the lessons. I know basic chords, barre chords, power chords, a little arpeggio and that's it. Things I know I am doing wrong or can't do: Pick properly (up-down rhythm), Strum independant of my singing pattern (if that makes sense), pinky control, soloing, scales, and everything else i am dying to learn. I am currently working on GUITAR EXERCISES FOR BEGINNERS lesson and learning to play to a metronome. Any other advice? Thanks in advance, and I look forward to being apart of the GMC community. Welcome!
As far as strumming independantly of yur singing - its just practice. Practice them both separately until you can do it in your sleep, then put them together. Good luck! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

And you know what, it may take 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month to get it working. Just make sure you sit down and practice hard until you got it. Everything takes time, sometimes a lot of time and practice, build a good base knowing scales, patterns, "boxes", alternate picking and chords. That's a sold ground for more advanced stuff later on! Good luck  (as if luck had something to do with it...)

Thanks guys! I started working on some of the Beginner Exercises and am finding it fun and easy to understand. (Good job Kris! lol)
Once I get my picking squared away I will move on to other stuff and focus on my speed and precision. Man I can't wait to learn more!
