My name is Anthony Dughman. I'm 24 years old and have been messing around with the guitar for nearly 13 years now. Living in San Francisco, CA, life is centered around work and there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. I'm finally getting my degree from San Francisco State University in less than 6 months. FINALLY! biggrin.gif

I'm one of those players that never really learned the guitar but could play pieces when I sat down and learned them. For example, I can play Muris's Oriental Shred with the tone control that Marcus Lavendell has. If you ask me to improvise, I'll be completely lost. I recently discovered Bill Edwards Fretboard Logic series and own all 3 books. Those books are invaluable to my knowledge bank. So now I have an understanding of the guitar and how to form chords, scales, etc... I have the technique but, I never had the knowledge. Shameful, I know. Help me get started! Cheers!!!

Hi Anthony and welcome to GMC. Very good decision if you want to improve your skills on the guitar. There have been many topics on this forum about improvising. Just look arround and also make sure you read a theory topics as they are very important for improvising and overall knowdelge which every musician should have. If you have that good technique as you say, I sugest that you start with mastering pentatonic scales and remember as many pentatonic licks as possible. After you can start with modes and from there you won't need much of a help as you will know how to continue yourself. It takes a couple of months to learn all that but practicing is the most important. Feel free to ask anything on this forum, there are many great people willing to help at any time. Have a nice time at GMC.

Hi there and welcom to the site....

What i did when learning to improvise i first learned the pentatonic scales and the i picked a backing track and played to it... The more i play the better i get at it.

So my advice is to play alot and read what you think you must know if you are like me and get bored with reading.....

Welcome to GMC Anthony smile.gif If you have recording gear, I would suggest you jump in the next GMC collab. You will have to improvise for the backing and the get some great feedback from the instructor on what to work on. Good luck!
