What Are Your Goals With The Guitar?

I am really interested to hear what my fellow guitarists have in mind of what your actual goals are and where you wanna be in the future with your guitar. I remember when I was 12, I picked up the electric guitar for the first time and my dream was become Ozzy Osbourne's future guitarist (crazy dreams you have as a child) tongue.gif
Throughout the years I've been playing very on-off, and my goals have shifted quite often. At the age of 15, I got rejected from a band for not having the skills, which really sparked a burning desire to become better. And later on throughout my teens, my goal was really to accomplish harder and harder lessons here at GMC and now at the age of 21, I'm moving to Berlin to get a degree in the guitar at a school called BIMM. There my primary goal will be to establish social connections through music and to polish my skills.

I'd really like to hear what your plans are with the guitar.

Great post! I'll be reading all posts here. smile.gif

My goal is to keep on enjoying guitar while getting better at everything I can (technique, expression, tone, improvisation, composition). I love exploring different styles of music and guitar playing. This keeps me moving, learning, creating and enjoying the process.

I picked up guitar enchanted by Luca Turilli's playing in Rhapsody, vintage Blind Guardian and Finnish power metal bands: Nightwish and Sonata Arctica, namely. I took Turilli's free 14-day course but at the amateur stage I was in and wrong ways of practice I didn't improve, though I remembered technicalities. Turilli often spoke about Jason Becker, YJM and Vinnie Moore. And Paganini. I liked Becker the most of these three and he "introduced" me to Marty Friedman. I like Friedman's approach to playing guitar. somewhere along the way my real life friends showed me Metallica, Led Zepp and Iron Maiden and I have had some phases around these as well. But neoclassical genre feels like the thing for me. I want to be able to play Paganini's pieces which will take me a decade maybe but I'll get there. Dancing Mad piece would make a great cover too and it's just as complicated. I feel to be able to play the "students' " music I should learn from the masters or the source directly. Otherwise I'll play Turilli's or Friedman's piece or two but won't understand them at all. And when one reaches the stage of understand, they can move around freely as they please. That is my ultimate goal, with many minors along the way.

Embracing styles of music that make me cringe a bit. There is a hugely popular guy on instagram named Charles Caswell. One mand bedroom band called BERRIED ALIVE with his gal. Makes a bunch of 8 bit djent loops and boy folks LOVE it. Sounded a bit too Nintendo Mario Kart to me, but such is life smile.gif So I'm always trying to open my ears to things that I find revolting. Black Metal is another example. Constant blast beats, chuggs, belch/puke vocals, I'm still trying to develop a taste for it. Like so many things in life, music can be an acquired taste. Like eating snails or even drinking Scotch.

I have a vision of just being able to play anything I want to on the fly, with any type of tone/feel.

And while getting there I want to work on becoming a better songwriter and general performer.

My goal remains that I want to be able to write music that I'm relatively happy with. However, I know that I need to practice more technique still to be able to write what I hear in my head. So it's a mix of song writing and practicing technique.
