Which horror movies would you recommend for Halloween night? 
Preferably ones from the 1980s-90s but which feel realistic.
I've never been into the genre but I remember seeing some cool scary movies as a kid (like the movie "It").

You asked for realism, so this is a list of films I'd recommend that aren't too outlandish:
The Shining - a truly creepy film.
Cannibal Holocaust - this may be too real. the director actually went to court over claims that he had people killed on film for realism. turns out it was just really good special effects.
Ghost story - a lesser known film that relies on a strong story rather than shock value.
The Fly (1986) - a very good remake of the 50's classic.
Opera - atypical Italian horror, less gore more psych.
There are, of course, dozens if not hundreds of non-realistic horror films that I would give my personal seal of approval.

Phantasm gave me nightmares as a kid (saw it in a movie theatre when I was like 11):
i'd link a youtube but the one I found is pretty graphic (as far as 1979 goes), so I'll leave it up to you

I've always been deathly afraid of The Exorcist.
Something about that movie gives me the chills...

Something about that movie gives me the chills...
both are excellent films.
since we are delving outside of the prescribed decade criteria, as well as myself breaking character by giving praise to a new movie, I also recommend "The Conjuring". It had elements from "The Amityville Horror", "the Exorcist", and dare I say "Evil Dead II". It had the solid script of a classic 70's/80's horror film but with updated and seamless special effects of today (without being overly dependent on them) Plus it has the added creepiness of using actual people (Ed and Lorraine Warren) to give an air of credulousness to the film.

+1 for the exorcist. I watched that when I was about 13, it stated 'based on a true story' and at the age I was I just thought that meant 'totally true..... this stuff happened'. Totally freaked me out!
probably quite dated now but well worth watching.
'The entity' - another one 'based on a true story' 
from the early 80s. I like that one.
'the blair witch project' - 1999. One of the first 'found footage' movies I saw. One of my favourite movies tbh, some folks dont like it but I think its great. The total helplessness of the people in it and the realism of their surroundings is cool
or any of the friday 13th ( not part 3 and not beyond part 6 ) or Halloween 1 & 2, original and the rob zombie remakes.

Oh you played the Halloween gig - that is awesome!
I must confess that I've never been on Halloween night out. Even though its not really our holiday or anything, we have some clubs organizing Halloween nights. I'd like to go as a pilot or a character from Back to the future
p.s. thanks for the movie recommendations, I'm making a "must watch horrors" playlist for myself.
