I decided that I am going to purchase the things I need to record my guitar and participate in the cool collaboration. However, I have a few questions. From reading other post it seems like the Tone Port GX will work for me. Here is a pick of the Outputs on the back of my Line 6 Flextone III Plus. First question, should I go XLR mono to ¼” into the GX and USB to the PC, or get a Y adapter (XLR) to ¼” stereo and run into the GX then USB? Will this work at all? Will this give me the best quality tone from my amp?

Once I get the sound in the PC I need recording software. Was looking at Line 6 Riffworks ($99 US). Looks pretty cool but I’m not sure if it will do everything I want. It’s not clear if you can pull in an mp3 file as a track, record your riff and mix it back out. I think you can only save your recordings as wav files, which mean I would have to convert it to mp3 using something like iTunes. I like the idea of having the Instant Drummer though and the software looks like it’s pretty easy to use. What do you guys think? Has anyone here used this? Should I be looking at something else? It would also be nice if I could take a recording of a song, pull out the guitar tracks and put in my own or just save it as a backing track to jam with. Maybe even slow down a recording without changing the key to learn a lick, or is this is a whole other topic and requires it’s own special software. Haven’t researched it much but I’m pretty sure Riffworks won’t do that.

I guess the most important thing is being able to participate and share with others here at GMC.

Thanks for your opinions and sorry for the long post.

"Think of a guitar solo as a paragraph. You need a clear beginning, a middle, and an end. Look at musical phrases like sentences, and make sure you break them up using punctuation—or space. You pause naturally when conversing, right? If you don't, you'll bore the listener. The same thing will happen with your audience if your solo is one dimensional. You'll wear them out and lose their attention." —Tom Principato

You should go XLR to 1/4 mono to GX..That way you'll record using your amp..You can also go directly from guitar and use simulations in the gearbox software..Experiment..Either way you will be able to record..
Hmm I think RIffworks is very useful software and it will definitely work for collabs...But before you buy it tryout the demo version and also look for some other recording software - I heard this one is very good and free "Reaper"...You won't be able to pull out guitars and other stuff from complete recordings (famous songs)..You can't do that in any software...About the slowing down I saw some plugins for winamp do the same thing...Also I may have noticed that option in gearbox-s looper....not sure though...

All in all , toneport is enough for participating in collabs..And I'm sure you will find a free recording software to use it with.. wink.gif

Try Reaper as your DAW software, you also get Ableton Lite free version with your Line 6 Toneport, try that too. IMHO, ABleton is better.

Also see if CUbase LE can be found at a decent price. It has a limited number of 16 vst instuments, and 24 tracks or something, but you don't need more anyway..

well protools is the best in the world(my thinking)...but if you wanna protools the best way is HD3 sistem(3 dsp cards)..but the price is 13000$...Steinberg platforms(Cubase/Nuendo)...ther are litlle cheaper..but need monny for that too....so I think that there is not need do buy extra software(besides the one you get for free with your sound card) for stuff like recording for colaboration.....the free softvare you get with sound card is good inofe

Go for Reaper and save the money, you can import mp3/wave and export mp3/wave.
But something more pro later on if you get more serious about recordings and such. smile.gif

Thanks everybody for your comments. Great advice from everyone. It’s nice to know for sure that the GX will let me record with my amp. Kind of figured I would just run it mono and dupe a track, pan one left and one right to achieve stereo. I think I read that in some ones post, but I’ve been reading a lot of stuff lately and can’t remember who it was. blink.gif

I was just reading about Reaper and it looks pretty sweet. Can’t beat it for the price. tongue.gif I guess now the important thing is just to get the GX and ROCK!! cool.gif Or do you guy’s think it is worth the extra to upgrade to the UX1?

Spent about 4 hours tonight jamming with the backing track from the GMC Ballad Collaboration in E minor. Wrote my first solo since I started playing again. Man that was fun! I am learning so much here. My wife looked at me with that sparkle in her eye when she walked in on me playing. wink.gif Well, you know the rest of the story. rolleyes.gif

This place is ggggreat!!

With the UX1 you have these extras, if you need them then buy that one:

1. microphone input (if you need to record something with mic)
2. phones out (if you wanna use the phones AND have a line out for speakers at the same time)
3. monitor in (if you wanna monitor a separate signal, like from a mic booth in studio)
4. line level input ( 2 more extra analog mono line-level insputs for recording something from CDplayer, radio or any analog source that has a line-level input)

Decided to go with the UX1. Got it today and can't wait to get started. smile.gif Great deal to. It was the last one the store had and was opened because someone wanted to see what it looked like or something ($104 US). Got some Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones for mxing cause I needed something. My PC speakers are junk sad.gif

It did come with Ableton so I'm going to try that and Reaper. I'll let you know when I post my first recording which will probably include several questions. A lot of new stuff to learn and play with.

Thanks again for your help everyone.
