haha why? You guys are making the whole science about 3 chords smile.gif I wrote an easy and quick approach for that progression. G5, Bb5 and C5 is very common progression in any style and since they are all power chords it shouldn't be that complicated. I would personaly use Gm pentatonic over all 3 chords and I am sure it would work. In case that G5 gives a (major chord) impression then I would use major pentatonic. Speaking about the tension and the strong notes of the scale is something we could talk for hours. I thought Toroso was looking for an easy and straightforward answer. Pedja could elaborate about this progression in 15000 words but I don't think Toroso was looking for that whole science smile.gif

LOL biggrin.gif That's OK, they are trying to help. And I need all of that I can get. And I understand know!

That was really not what I was reffering to. smile.gif I tried not to make a whole science about it. I just wanted Toroso to try and figure it out him self with a few tools to do so, and you were just the first to write the answer wink.gif

Ok I know you were also trying to help smile.gif My answer wasn't the first but Toroso said he likes to hear many options so it's all ok. I would like Pedja to try to explain about this progression, we could read for hours when he elaborates on milion approaches for these 3 simple power chords smile.gif I'll try to get him write something here smile.gif

What seems to be a problem guys - too few choices over G5 Bb5 and C5 ?

G minor pentatonic works if you want Rock/Blues approach over it, but you can make it as advanced as you like.

Take a look at these chords (power chords)

G5 = G D
Bb5 = Bb F
C5 = C G

These are not complete chords, they are missing some sort of 3rd in them ! Thats why they are called power chords, or intervals of perfect 5ths.
In order to determine full approach to this harmony, you as improviser have ability to color these chords any way you want. In other words, you can choose whether your G power chord will become G major or G minor chord. The same thing applies for Bb and C power chords.

When you think about those possibilities, solutions become endless as you have a lot of choices that you can use over basic Major or Minor chords.

For example

G major
Bb Major
C major

All major chords, constant structure used in harmony. You can play G diminished (half whole scale) over first two chords (G major and Bb major) and over C major you can play different diminished scale (C half whole diminished for example).

Thats a rather outside approach to these simple harmonies, but they will get you to sound cool and hip versus G minor pentatonic which everyone would do smile.gif

There is plenty of more approaches of course, this is just one example of what you can do with simple Power chord harmony.

Hope that helps smile.gif

Ok, one more solution then smile.gif

Lets say that you take those power chords and you want this time to turn them all minor sounding.

You get G minor, Bb minor and C minor chords.

Really cool approach you can take here is use two different Melodic minor scales smile.gif

Over G minor use G melodic minor.

Then you get two triads, Bb minor and C minor. Beauty of these two triads is that they are both contained in Melodic minor scale itself, in this case Bb melodic minor.

Eventually you end up with G melodic minor and Bb melodic minor scales as your soloing options.
This is very fusion sounding as we have interval of minor 3rd between two scales, which is used very frequently in Fusion music. Think about Fusion collaboration I did in February ( A minor to C minor wink.gif ...

I am just talking about scales here, don't forget you can use chord tones, tensions, arpeggios and pentatonics all here smile.gif

There must be some half/whole approach and stuff like that. Pedja is waiting for another chance to give the 3rd solution smile.gif haha

Haha smile.gif
In the first solution we had 2 different half whole scales (from G and C).

You can of course do the exact same thing for Minor harmony ( G minor Bb minor and C minor) and use same half whole scales (G half whole for G and Bb, and C half whole for C minor).

Just figured Melodic minor could be cool for change in 2nd solution smile.gif
