Hi all
I've been thinking lately about putting together a list (with your help!), containing the most important guitarists of all time, and see if we can slowly incorporate all of them into our wiki. As I didn't know where to start (there are zillions ), I took Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time list. Granted this is a subjective & far from perfect list. There are MANY important guitarists missing. But it's a start
I took the time to check how many of them were already in our wiki and added the link.
So, what can we do now?
Great idea Fran. I'll try and write some of these sometime. I'd also like to add Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Slash, and Eric Johnson.
Eric Johnson , add him please
Added
dont forget Guthrie Govan and Steve Vai!
I would say that Marty Friedman (of Megadeth, and solo) and persons like Jan Akkerman (of Focus) should be added to the list as well.
Very good idea !! It would be awesome to have articles on all of these players in the wiki!!
Just some guys to add:
Buckethead, Nuno Bettencourt, Chet Atkins, Brent Mason, John Frusciante, Shawn Lane, Allan Holdsworth and Paul Gilbert
I'm working on few at the moment - but I really must get on with doing some work... I'll get back to it later
good idea
Ok, all added
I also sorted the list alphabetically so that it's easier to check existent guitarists & entries!
I couldn't find Gus G from Firewind in there
Does it need to be an whole page of info about the guitarists or will it do with just some basic information about them?
Greg Howe, Ritchie Kotzen perhaps ?
Edit : Also Frank Gambale (Chick Corea band deserves to be there for sure !)
Ok, list is updated!
We already got a new entry, http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Christophe_Godin, by Artemus
I don't know if this helps but this blog is really great to add some names to the list...and maybe more info too
http://truthinshredding.blogspot.com/search/label/Alex%20Machacek
It's great to see so many replies here!
In our Guitarist Top 5, we have five names, but one doesn't have his own Article........ GUTHRIE GOVAN! Anyone interested? it doesn't have to be five pages, just some general info.
Heres some: John Mayer, Pat Metheny, Alex Lifeson (Rush), Yngwie Malmsteen, Albert King. George Lynch, George Benson, Alexi Laiho, Gary Moore, Tommy Emmanuel and Tuck Andress
How about Ace Frehley? Not the most technically proficient player, but her sure influenced a lot of players in the 70's.
Thanks guys, some big names missing! This is starting to look good
Keep them coming
I noticed Ted Nugent is not on our list.

List updated!
Trevor Rabin (Yes), Daryl Stuermer (Genesis, Phil Collins), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Jeff Golub (Billy Squier), Rik Emmett (Triumph), Mike Rutherford (Genesis), Bruce Kulick (Kiss)
I added the most notable band affiliations just for perspective so people know who some of them are, if not familiar with that generation of music.
Awesome, list updated
I agree it's a good idea to include the band they play in.
List is now updated with all recent guitarist entries, keep them coming!
With the untimely and unfortunate death of Michael Jackson, it made me think of a really fantastic guitar player to add, Steve Stevens (Billy Idol). He recorded one track with Michael, called Dirty Diana that has some pretty cool guitar.
I am currently working on:-
Slash
Robert Johnson
Mark Knopfler
Richard Thompson
Carlos Santana
Chet Atkins
Danny Gatton
David Gilmour
Jerry Garcia and
Keith Richards!!!
And you can add Walter Trout to the list as well!!!
You're on a tear, SJ! I'm back from vacation and will start getting some done right away.
I'll work on:
Steve Stevens
Bruck Kulick
Steve Howe
Cheers!
Wow guys, cool lists there that's awesome
By the way, be sure to check that the entry doesn't already exist! For instance, Jeff Healey is already in our wiki, though it didn't appear in the list. Always type the name in the wiki first, just in case. I'm going to add Healey now
All new articles are covered in the wiki:
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Portal:Guitarists
The Band portal is very unpopular, maybe some bands are ok as welll?
I can't believe I didn't think of Randy Bachman (Bachman Turner Overdrive).
How outrageous ! The Iron Maiden guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers aren't on the list ! Apart from that, the list is awesome ! There are quite a few Iron Maiden lessons here on GMC as well ! You can check 'em out on this link :
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/search_results.php?textSearch=Iron+Maiden&page=0
Kaki King, Liona Boyd To add a couple of amazing female guitarists into the mix.
Right! I'll add them both right now
Has anyone said Kai Hansen already? Sascha Gerstner? Henjo Richter? Michael Weikath?
Thanks for the input Twist, updating the list now
And the list keeps growing
Thanks for all your input guys, this is really beginning to look good
Hi, I'd like to add Michael Schenker to the list.
Zicco
As they link to bands I have covered I will do
Pete Townsend
Paul Kossoff
George Harrison
There may be some duplication of content is that ok Fran?
When I did the band entries for the above I felt that their most important and influential work was in the context of The Who, Free and The Beatles. Perhaps in therms of the GMC wiki I should have concentrated on the guitarist rather than the band??
Hi Fran
Just realised that Kossoff was one of my first entries, your list needs a link.
Cheers
Steve Stevens being written now, as well as Nuno Bettencourt and Matthias Ia Eklund.
Awesome
Hi, Here is a few more guitar player:
Tommy Bolin
Brian Robertson
Scott Gorham
Steve Lukather
Zicco
It's been a while since we don't get some feedback/entries on the list, just though I'd bump our knowledge base Guitarist project up there!
John 5 http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/John_5
Adding it to the list now
We have a new entry, Marcus Siepen, courtesy of our member Quadrium
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/wiki/index.php/Marcus_Siepen

Fran, YOU RAWK! This is a great idea and will make a killer addition to the already killer WIKI
Some ideas for new players. Sorry if any are repeats.
Frank Gambale (A master of sweep picking/jazz etc.)

Anybody mention Tony McAlpine? He played in Steve Vai's touring band and is an accomplished classical piano player as well as a solo artist.

Also, how about a few Female Players? Jennifer Batten for example.

I'd like to add Mario Parga to the list. He is just a great guitarist. Check this song A wiki article about him is coming soon
Dimebag Darrel should be there, in my opinion.
Just added Mario Parga to the wiki
