I have some chord melody instruction material and a comprehensive practical theory and know your fretboard inside out type course by Frank Vignola and he is playing in Galway tonight, so I thought why not go along and see him in action

What an evening. The concert was held in Nun's Island Theatre, a small 80 seater converted church, which unfortunately looks to have been gutted and turned into a black box style venue, so no pretty stonework or woodwork to be seen. Not that your eyes would have moved from the stage at any time in the evening.

Frank and Vinny play about 150 shows a year, so things are slick, even when they get spontaneous (making a show of some late comers and performing a quick summary of the first 4 tunes for them). The musicianship maybe some serious stuff but the musicians not so much, from prancing around the stage whilst playing a piece from Swan Lake, incorporating stairway to heaven into a jazz standard, to their Rat Pack style banter and jokes throughout the evening.

The playing was exhausting to watch Vinny's right arm certainly got a workout comping throughout the night, and Frank seems to downstroke even more than Metallica, and he's fast with it too (though he does Alt pick for the really shreddy lines)

I had a front row seat in front of Frank (that's what happens when you get there an hour early and aren't afraid to push older people out of your way!, Hey I'm more used to mosh pits!) So I had a really good view of the stunning technique on display and his awesome tone.

I want Frank's guitar but it's got a $8.5K price tag. I was suprised that Vinny played on a Collings cutaway dreadnaught rather than a more orthodox jazz guitar but it works for him.

If you get the chance to see Frank and Vinny, go, even if you're not a big jazz fan, I'm not and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

That is the way to go! biggrin.gif

Sounds like a great evening and it is always refreshing to see a concert which you wouldn't normally attend.
They music they play sounds so uplifting and fun smile.gif

I have attended two concerts on pure luck (for one I won the tickets in a radio show on the day of the concert and for other one our band was gifted some tickets). They were Pink Martini and Madonna smile.gif

Pink Marini concert blew my mind away - it was awesome! smile.gif
It was in a big arena and there were not so many people in the audience so I could get close and it was a pretty intimate concert. Really loved them and I never had a chance to hear one song from them prior to the concert so it was a nice surprise.

Madonna concert was interesting, went there with my band and it was a well rehearsed show to all the small details and choreography.
