my laptop is currently broken!

well.... not entirely.

it works for around half a hour and then turns itself off.

it isnt going into hibernation mode or standby or anything and ive changed the power settings so that it doesnt do that.

the only time ive ever seen anything like this was when my main computer done it and i had to replace the motherboard, memory and processor to get it to work again.

has anyone got any suggestions as to why its doing this?
i stumped sad.gif

Im not entirley sure but you could try one of the computer nerds forums like overclockers.co.uk , they are pretty quick in answering this like this.

Have you added or removed any hardware recently? smile.gif

Is your battery ok? Is the power connection into your computer faulty? The computer may be running out of charge then turning off.

Also, even though it's highly likely to be a virus there's no harm in running a virus scan just to make sure.

Ok, and does it restart or turn of completely? Im wondering if your laptop is overheating possibly. smile.gif

It can be several different issues, like bad power lines, bad battery, no ventilation, high temperature, defragmented hardrive, viruses, driver issues...etc

Try to repair windows, if that doesen't work, i suggest you do a full system reinstall. That would work more than anything.

In my experience if the computer is shutting down completely its because your system BIOS is trying to protect your hardware from overheating. It is also possible that your power supply is faulty!

May I ask how old your laptop is? smile.gif

Well a re-install would rule out any OS related issus for sure. It would at least help narrow it down to a hardware issue if the problem persists! smile.gif

+1 - sounds a lot like overheating to me - check the vents and fans for dust that might be impeding the airflow.

If it is completely shutting off it is hardware related and a reinstall of windows is highly unlikely going to solve anything. Just from experience I would say it is the motherboard. If it is a dell most definitely, especially an older Dell.
