I wouldn't take place in this, but I can definitely see where having your playing analyzed by the instructors would be desired by some. Might be worth considering as a premium service to include in another level of membership and instructors can be further compensated for agreeing to take part.

Still, I'd fear it would stretch the instructors too thin as they're already active in the community as is, to require another service of them would be fairly demanding and it could bring down the quality of the lessons that are already posted on the site, which are the lifeblood of the site IMO.

Just having silly little titles for post counts reaching certain points would be fine with me tongue.gif.

Goliath, I agree with you on each and every point!
Eloquently said! laugh.gif

It is a really good idea !! biggrin.gif and quite a creative one at that so hats off to you! biggrin.gif

I do feel however that as Goliath has mentioned it would seriously stretch our instructors time!! I know they are already very busy with there "non Gmc lives" laugh.gif biggrin.gif Plus the fact they are already most generous with donating there time and knowledge here ! smile.gif

Again I think if this were to be made a reality it would have to be part of a premium service to support the instructors ! just a thought wink.gif

Well.. Some of them even now want us, to post our recordings - the extra work for them would be, that after listening, they will rank it from 1 to 5 points. Is this such a big stretch? I dont think, there will be a thousand headed crowd on uploads forum from them day by day.. I guess, that around 200 pepole would participate - say that 8 "judges/instructors" (thats minimal number IMO..) would be there, so thats like 30 uploadings with lenght around 45 sec - and number of uploading per capita can be limited and also - do you finish more than 1 lesson per two weeks on level, that you can upload it?smile.gif Especially at those harder ones, it takes quite some time:)

Easier lessons takes less time to do - but, as I said, members, that would get Advanced level can be allowed to rate non-rated/beginner uploads:)

But its on instructor.. none of them said their opinion yet:(

But if you play a beginner lesson and get 5/5, then play an advanced one and get 2/5, wouldnt that hurt you when you could have just playing another easy lesson?

There are two possible solutions - the points from easier lessons would be divided - if there were not enough lessons on corresponding level (say you want to get from beg/int to int, and there is not enough beg/int lessons for you).. or harder lessons points could be multiplied...

or

Say you would need 50 points for every promotion - but points of correspondingly difficult lesson.. Its hard to explain (Yngwie???), but this can be simply solved smile.gif

I think the premium service point is a very good one, lets not forget that some of the instructors do this as part of their living, I appreciate that you say it would not take up too much of their time, but would it?

rather than comment and suggest constructive ways on how to improve they would need to analyse the videos much more carefully, there would need to be a set of ground rules laid out for instructors to follow in order to award "points" fairly accross all videos to all members, would taking part in the forums and helping us with their lessons be as much fun for them anymore if they had to "mark" the videos? would they like the idea of rather than saying this to you, "if you do x & y it may help you out a little" or "the timings just slightly off there, but great effort keep it up!" or would they rather just give you a mark? my guess is they`d much rather encourage you.

I dont know, as you say we could do with an instructors view point to really get an idea, I think interaction with the instructors is a vital part of learning things, but you can make use of that now fully, they are more than happy to help, its just down to the individual if they use that facility or not.

Please dont get me wrong, I do like this idea, I`m just not sure how it would be possible and if all instructors would be willing to participate? or if its really as simple as you think it will be to impliment?

Firstly, we need those opinions, then I will take a week or two and think it all over and try to bring an solution - if Kris and Instructors will be for it:)
Now, its just an idea and I want to discuss an idea - especially with the ones, who will take the most heat - Instructors:)

Its quarter past 1 A.M. and I get up to school at 6 A.M. so I rather go to bed lol :-D

Sweet dreams :-D

I quite like the idea! Althought I think it would be demoralizing for people that have less time to practice and learn, this way you can actually see the others racing ahead of you... It would become competition, which is good and bad at the same time...

And if the idea starts off Kris would have to issue another payment for instructors, just as there is for collabs and forum posting.

And Goliath, what do you mean by premium fee? Like, we could have "basic" subscribtion like it is now, "gold" subscribtion and get more attention by instructors?

Honestly, the heart of my concern would be more along causing a rift in the community. If you've ever known any "hot shot" guitarist in any band that's a prima donna and already is an elitist, now they're going to have ammo to prove they are better than you. One of the aspects that I enjoy about this community so much is you can literally benefit from everyone's insight on an issue because you have no basis for comparison. About all you can do is take a look at someone's gear then take a stab at their abilities, but even that's grasping at straws, I've got better gear than people I know better than me, and likewise, I know I'm better than some folks with professional set ups.

Couple that with my earlier concerns, make it a premium service only visible to folks on board that only premium folks can see.

Plus, I'm sure there are other ideas rolling around in Kris's head he's working on implementing, and for the most bang for his and our bucks, I don't think this idea should even be a priority for him. Things that enhance the core competency of the site are worthwhile endeavors, like bookmarks, a more accurate rating system, etc.

Don't mean to torpedo your idea, and I can understand how some folks would love to have this service, but as is you can post videos of yourself playing on youtube and have folks evaluate it in the guitarist analysis board.

haha and for any Metalocalypse fans, this sounds too much like "Banana Stickers" for me to not mention it.

I don´t like the idea about qualifying, it´s not the point here. I like the idea instructor comments about members recording. I propose to organize this way, set a topic about some specific aspect of music and start uploadind /comenting. The other posibility is member´s upload their version of specifics lesson to the instructor who gave it so to know what he thinks.

I think the reason GMC works so well today is that we are all equal regardless of our musical ability smile.gif When i log onto the forum I feel no better or worse than anyone I corrospond with - and I think this is what makes us very special and stands us apart from the rest. biggrin.gif

Very good point imo.
I don't think grading us would be a good move. Generally you know whether or not you're playing an exercise right and if you need further feedback the instructors are very responsive.
I could be wrong, but this could turn into people just wanting to be graded to show off and say:
"ha, I have 'advanced' next to my name".

I can see how this idea could be motivating and fun, if done right.

The problem is that making a ranking could turn GMC into a competition.

And music is heart, soul, "pride and joy"!... but not a competition.

Just my 2 cents.

Agree.
We(instructors) are doing our best to give all constructive feedbacks, advices and comments
on any uploaded file, specially if it's some of the lessons.
Rankings,dunno,might be nice,can't tell for sure smile.gif

I would say - no rankins, maybe some general tips how hard the lesson is.

I don't like rankings, music is not a competition. Somebody could play really fast and being a very bad musician, and viceversa. The technique is only a way, the end is the music, that's the important. We must be careful with comparisons.

Well... the same can be told about GMC bands and the idea of band war.. And those tags like "I am member of advanced GMC band.." But I agree, that this can be risky thing and can harm GMC, if not done properly:)

Anyway - since most of you (especially instructors - on which the strain would be inflicted) are against, I think we can close this thread:)

Thanks for feedback:)

i agree that music itself isnt a competition but sometimes competition brings out the best in people and gives them another reason to try harder. aslong as the competition stays friendly i think that the quality of some peoples playing would rise... however it would have to be closly moderated as some people may take it too seriously.

there are pros and cons to this idea and if thought out thoroughly it could become a successful addition to GMC.

it would however give the forums more of an RPG feel lol.

I see no comparison in this idea and the band wars idea at all? and I`m pretty sure that none of the band tags say anything like that so a little out of context imo.

however, I didnt think your idea was terrible, it needed the opinion from those that would have to be involved and now that they have responded, we know where it lies.

Dont stop presenting your ideas and thoughts, thats what helps GMC grow, just dont be disappointed if your idea isnt widely accepted smile.gif

I really like this idea.. my only problem is the fact that i have no recording abilities sad.gif .. i guess i could buy a webcam pritty cheap and record some really low level stuff but thats not my preferance.. lets see where brainstorming takes us.. it would be a great motivator to get all the way through lessions if we knew we had to submit them biggrin.gif
