I never got addicted to smoking but one way you could kick the habit is every time you have a cigarette you have to restring every one of your guitars and go sing a michael jackson song in public. I know that would make me quit if I had to smile.gif

David, I`m sorry, yes I am trying, but I`m a pathetic individual that is hooked (actually worse than I feared)
alas I made it through 1 whole day, I have not been smoking at work as much the last couple of days, someone even noticed, so I felt that that was a start? I will keep trying tho, its gunna be tough!

You can do it David - I quit the final time in 2000 and it changes your life in a really good way. It took me three big quits to finally let it go completely but it does eventually lose its grip on you.
I found it helped to limit the places/times /amount I smoked and gently get used to less and less, then I gave up completely New Year 2000 - figured the turn of the century was as good a time as any to get real laugh.gif

I quit recently, it was hard as hell since all my friends smoke...But if you just take it day by day and never EVER have a pack on your person or your house you should be okay.

If you have the will power to learn to play guitar the way you do, I can assure you that you have the will power to stop smoking!

Congrats, dude! I tried 3 - 4 times before I finally quit. It's hell to do, but in the end, there's so many benefits to quitting. I feel 100x better since I quit a little over 2 years ago. Hang in there man, the roughest point is usually over after 2 weeks. You'll still hit a spot here and there where you want a smoke, but the longer you're quit, the cravings become a lot less frequent and a lot less intense!

Good job David. I hope your will power withhold the cigs. I myself smoke but only in a rare occasion (the most I've smoked was 4 sticks a month). I never got addicted to it. As long as I don't buy a pack, I think I'm good. That should also be your philosophy. As long as you don't have a cig in your house, your not gonna be smoking up.

Heya David,

Stick with it, it gets easier. I smoked for nearly 10 years. Then back in September we went on holiday to Mijas in Spain, and I intentionally didn't bring any with me. Result was a few evenings of "I'm having a drink, and I now need a cig" which eventually eased off. Then by the time I got back, it wasn't really an issue. So it's been nearly 20 weeks now.

Just keep yourself busy, and best of luck with it smile.gif

Been smoking 6-7 year and then just quit. DIdn't quit right away thoguh, but during a period over a year, slowly quiting more and more. Not incrementaly, more like trying more than once wink.gif

Now I light occasionally, like once a month in a company and that it.

I smoked for about 5 years and got all the way up to a pack a day. I didn't even have to use a metronome! biggrin.gif

After about 7 tries, I was able to quit on my 21st birthday. That was almost 15 years ago and I haven't smoked a cig since. Here are a few things to consider that helped me quit.

1. Know the date you quit and keep track of how long it has been since your last smoke. This doesn't sound like it is all that important, but it is. The reason is that the longer you go, the greater your sense of accomplishment and the more tragic it is if you light up again.

2. Inform as many people as you can of the date you quit and how long it has been. It sort of gives you a little accountability. If someone you respect and admire is keeping track of your progress, it will help you stay on track.

3. Friends that smoke are brutal. Misery loves company and if you quit and they still smoke, they really don't care if you light up or not. Some will try and tempt you or sabotage you. Let them know that it is important to you and you won't appreciate them stifling your progress.

4. Cutting down does not work!!! It takes a long time to get the nicotine out of your system. When you cut down, you are only extending the time it stays in your system. The longer nicotine is in your system, the longer you have to fight the cravings.

5. Nicotine addiction is just like alcoholism, heroin, or any other substance addiction. Alcoholics can't go 5 years without a drink and then have a drink here or there. Once you quit smoking, you are done. You can't even have one. Trust me. Before I quit the final time, I once went 8 months without a single smoke. I bummed one cig off of a co-worker, and within a month, I was back to buying my own and had to start the process all over again.

Finally, always remember why you are quitting. Cigarettes are poison. Plain and simple. Nothing good comes from them. People say they help them relax. But that is a figment of their imagination. Cigs only help people relax because the nicotine depletion is raising their stress levels!

Hope this helps and remember this joke:

An 8 year old boy is sitting on a park bench, smoking a cigarette.
A guy walks up to the youth and says, "You know, if you keep smoking, you are going to die young.
To this, the boy replies, "My grandfather lived until he was 99 years old."
The man said, "Oh really? Did he smoke?"
The boy replied, "No. But he knew how to mind his own effing business!"

Good Luck,
Kevin

you shouldn't quit suddenly, it's best to smoke less and less and then try to stop completly after a couple of weeks

I have only respect for people who manage to quit smoking.

They say nicotine is possibly the most addictive drug on the planet - even more so than heroin (although obviously the effects of long term consumption are not as bad)

I come from a family where quite a lot of people smoke and I have to say that being exposed to it is not my thing, If anything I think being around smokers has put me off ever even trying it in the first place, my personal opinion is that the money spent on smoking could easily support a more enjoyable guitar purchasing habit biggrin.gif

Good luck and well done to everyone here who is trying to or who has kicked the habit, I understand it is a very hard thing to do and you need enormous willpower - I have seen many people try to stop and fail but I believe you all can manage it smile.gif
