Jamming With Another Guitar Player, How important is it?

Unfortunately I don't have other players to jam with for the most part. A couple people at my work play, but we don't have the oppertunity while working to play obviously. Therefore I wanted to see what GMC thought about this topic and if it would be worth my while to find some other people and set something up. I'm basically an analog player in his whole setup. What I'd like to do is get together with another guitar player who was better than me and jam out. When I'm with my guitar teacher, it's mostly him giving me a pointer or two and a lesson plan. You can also add me on msn messanger(pm me if you want it) and jam with me! How would I go about using it and what would I need in the way of PC hardware - just a decent sound card? When I jam with my friend I usually just lay down a simple guitar part then theres like 10 minutes of him working his magic with effects and filters etc. It's cool don't get me wrong, but I'm not really "jamming" per se.
