Ok,

I'm not a gamer really, used to play a lot of PC games but not for a while. I am thinking of getting a PS3 to play a few games but also as a Blu Ray player and media center.

One thing puzzles me though - what is the use of the disk drive on the PS3? I won't use it for media as I have all that on other servers, and leaving media aside, what would you use it for - game saves? I would think 80G would be unbelievable overkill for that so I am puzzled. Why do you need it? Is it worth paying an extra $100 to go from 40 to 80, if so why?

You can save your mp3 music on it which usually takes a few gbs. When it comes to games it's not only savegames but bonuscontent you can download like extra levels which needs to be stored. I'm not sure but I think it is possible to download playstation 1 classic games. I'm also not sure about it but I think the 40gb version can not play ps2 games and has less video output options.

If you can afford it, go for the 80GB, 40GB Is missing alot of options like the USB Ports and like the post above, i think its missing video outputs (or some). And it does not play the old PS2 Games.

I think that you can install an operating system like linux on ps3..Also some games have downloadable content (Guitar Hero 3)...I think that extra space on HD will come in handy in the future.. wink.gif

Good point - installing Linux might well be something to try - I might een use it for MythTV at some stage.

Linux install though is kinda ehh from what I have read. There is a flavor just for the PS3, but they recommend you have a flash drive for storage. We have a MAC support guy at our work that I discussed it with; you can do it, but not sure if it's really worth it.

If you want I have a PS3 thats 80gb I'm looking to get rid off because I don't use it for games at all. I just use it for DVD watching. I have a couple of games for it too.

Also the blue-ray on the PS3 is junk. It has some horizontal line issue during playback. I know there has been some updates since I purchased mine, but not sure if the playback is any better. I have 300 on blue-ray and I was very disappointed. My TV is a 58 inch DLP and I thought regular DVD playback was more enjoyable to watch.

If you want to watch Blue-Ray I would suggest just buying a seperate player and for games a 360. That is unless there are some PS titles you are really wanting like Metal Gear.

I don't mean to be a PS3 basher, but having purchased one I'm not really impressed and I played my 360 much more than I ever did the PS3.

Dont apologise for being a basher, I think thats quite interesting actually, I`m holding off buying a PS3 atm, I`d like one but hear good and bad things about it so keep putting it off (coupled with the fact that I keep buying guitar gear lol)

I`m completly torn whether or not to get one.

I think the PS3 may get better over time as more solid titles come out. As a gamer, I personally don't see anything on the PS3 line up that I have to have. There isn't a Halo 3 yet for that system that makes me want to keep owning it. I'm sure though in the future there will be something, but so many games are multi-platform you get the good stuff on Xbox or Wii.

If you can get one for a deal then I say get one if you like the PS titles and plan on using it for games, and DVD's etc. But if you are in the market for a game system, I'd recommend the 360 if you don't already have one.

Personally I'd like to off mine so I can use the money to buy guitar gear! I have my eye on a toneport and Reaper in the future along with a video card for the PC.

Hey Andrew, I have the original 60gb. I also do not use it for media. However...with PS3 software titles being $60 bucks each, I go to the playstation store while I'm connected and download all of the demo games and extra levels. It has already is half full. There is plenty more to come. I would go with the 80gb for sure. Who knows about emerging new technology and apps. Also the Blu ray capabilities are top notch. I would also spend the $25 for the bluetooth ps3 multi media remote. It will upconvert you standard dvds to a full 1080p, they look great. Good luck.

I'm thinking of getting one myself, but I don't have the urge of getting one right now... When God of War 3 or MGS 4 hits the stores, then it's a must buy biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

MGS4 released on the 12th of July...

As for the PS3 another big difference between the 40gb model and 80gb model is the 40gb doesn't have wireless, while the 80gb does. You also have to keep in mind that most PS3 games install files to the harddrive as well, which will take up a fair bit of room depending on how many games you have.

Well I have 40gb Ps3 and it has a fully functional wireless and 2x usb (60gb version has 4x usb + memory card reader) inputs just to get the facts straight...
As far as the outputs go you have everything you need: Digital OUT, AV MULTI OUT for tv or just for audio if you use monitor & HDMI out so you can even plug it in to your monitor if it supports HDMI.
But yes 60 gb version supports PS2 titles and 40g does not!
As far as the disc goes its needed as it was written in previous posts for savegames, extra content, game updates, downloadable content and some games even need to install on it smile.gif ... but it is a standard disk as far as I understand and any HDD for notebooks fits in it... so you can just buy another disk if needed...

You have to be really careful when buying the PS3. The base model has a 40gb and a 80gb version. Neither are backwards compatible.

The reason the PS3 needs such big Hard drives is because most games require you to install the game date like with a computer. So every game you play is around 5gb gone.
