Generally thicker gauge will have fuller sound, but it depends most on the player really.

Most people I know play bigger strings because they have the feeling that the sound of the guitar becomes more fat. On the other hand bending and some chords become more difficult.

A beginner should be aware that the risk for injuries can increase with higher gauges because you usually have to apply more pressure.
