Lets keep it interesting and post reasons like Duncan did
Mother - Dave Gilmour An Intensely melodic solo that really kicks the song up a notch, and blends beautifully with the accompaniament, a total song experience Tender Surrender - Steve Vai Well the whole song is really a solo - it starts slow, takes you to the heights of virtuoso passion then slows you down again - exhausting! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (second solo)
It's just so.. Awesome! It sounds false but it really fits, and it creates the most amazing feeling ever. Agalloch - Not Unlike the Waves Melodic, technical, everything. It fits the song perfectly and well, that's all I can say. Agalloch - A Desolation Song An acoustic solo, and.. Just perfect. I love it. Opeth - Harvest It's so extremely tasteful, and well beautiful, can't describe it better.. Opeth - Beneath the Mire - last solo The ultimate Peter Lindgren experience. I love all his solo work, but this is my favourite, it's amazing, and when it reaches it's climax at the end.. wow. Last but not least: Sörskogen - Mordet i Grottan I really can't comment it. This solo is perfect, and so is the song. Mikael Åkerfeldt + Dan Swanö = win This post has been edited by Fsgdjv: Jan 27 2008, 11:44 AM |

Don't see what is so great about Opeth's solos, though, awesome riffs, weak solos, awesome band still though. Well, I can clearly see that you are into shred solos there, so maybe it's just not your style.. Have you heard some of the early and faster solos though? like this for instance? The solo is about 5.45 in the song. |

I can't stand the pentatonic scale used in a metal or rock context, good for blues, it sounds extremely annoying over the heavy progressions. Regular minor, major, harmonic minor are much much much much much more suited for the genre IMO. I love Opeth and their riffs, just not a big fan of the solos. I would have to say that EVH's Eruption is probably one of the best. George Lynch's Mr Scary ranks pretty high on the list as well.
