Hi there, Joe Kataldo here, I want to make a seven string post with useful info about guitars, gear, theory and techniques, for all seven string players.

I'll answer personally and, with the help of other GMC instructors too(I hope so laugh.gif ), we can slowly make a "7 string Guide" collecting informations from your requests.

So, just start asking questions about pick-ups, guitars gear etc. and make it grow smile.gif

I don't have much experience with 7 string guitars. But I look forward to learn more about it in this thread smile.gif

Well.. so I'll kick this thread off a bit - since I LOVE 7 strings:) And I plan to buy one:)

I would like to ask two questions:)

1stly - Are chords possible on 7 string? If yes, how much heavier the fingering is?
With most of chords on 6 string, I have a strange feeling, that one more finger on my hand would be useful:D
(also when soloing, another finger would be killer - for those stupid 5+ fret strechtes:D Damn you, Pavel:D)

and secondly... meh.. what i wanted to know? geeze..
Ah finally:) What is the difference in neck? I have guessed, that it is different.. in its shape you know..
How is it to play on one?smile.gif

im thinking about building my own 7 string guitar, is there anything i should keep in mind thats specific to a 7 string (apart from the obvious) when going about making it? Are some guitar bodies not suited to a 7 string set up, as i intended to make a 7 string Les Paul :|

Sure, some very cool for example you can add a bass D note on the 3rd fret on 7 string to a D5 Open Power Chord

also there is a specific website that will shove you chords for free http://www.gootar.com/folder/guitar7.html

About fingering you surely will not use bar chords on seven strings, so don't worry about it

Well, the neck is bigger, and the fingerboard wider, I've played a couple of gigs with a seven string, were I really didn't need the low B, just to experiment, and your hand will be weary sooner then on a normal guitar, I think mainly because of the bigger neck

Well, personally, I didn't had this impression, you can alway ignore the 7 string and add it when you need wink.gif

I suppose the neck pocket should be bigger to fit the bigger and wider neck, apart from that the scale is the same (for standard tuning), anyway this is a more liuther side question, I can't answer for sure

P.S.

The carvin website has a custom shop for 7 string and they sell kits too
