Im not sure if theres a thread like this anywhere, i had a brief look but couldnt find anything

Im thinking about building my own guitar, not from scratch, but dont know how to go about it. I dont want to make the body or the neck, my plan is to buy each piece seperately, and then stick them together, but i dont know where to start.

Im thinking about getting a Les Paul body, or Explorer body and then working from there

Has anyone else done this, or have any useful suggestions?

When I get round to starting this project i'll keep GMC updated with my progress biggrin.gif

I think there is someone building a guitar from scratch in the blog section of the GMC web site. Clicky

There are kits available to assemble your own guitar Clicky. Not sure about the quality but its a cheap way of having a new guitar.

I wish you all the success in your build an look forward to seeing and hearing the finished article.

There's a kit that I hear is good, Saga. I guess it's the same as linked by Crazyfret

im in the middle of doing this atm.
i think the kits linked above are probably more sensible than the way i did it.
i got a body and neck off ebay, and im buying all the hardware and other parts from general guitar stores.

Just a quick question, i want to make a 7 string explorer/les paul, would i have to modify the body of the guitar (originally intended for 6 string use) to suit 7 strings?

Yeah, think about it logically, the neck is going to be wider, but it also wouldnt work if you just took an old bolt on body and tried to extend the neck joint as there would already be holes situated in it for a 6-string neck.

ah good point Owen, and i cant find a Les Paul body that isnt bolt on, or suited for 7 Strings anywhere :|

I could buy a normal LP body and then use some dowel or magic (My step dads the carpenter, he'd know) to fix it/wedge it in place

I think im going to get this neck, since im looking for 24 frets http://www.warmoth.com/guitar/necks/necks....warmoth_7string

If not from Warmoth, then the nearest/cheapest place

Just stuck looking for a body now :|

Warmoth makes some of the best parts out there.
If you want your stuff to last forever get stainless steel frets installed in your Warmoth neck (additional charge) its so worth it. I own two warmoth necks. They are awsome.

I did some upgrades on a Squire tele. More Pickups, pots and a 4way switch. Some mounting and plates needed tweaked.
