Many of you have experienced on some gigs a "bad" audience night. It means that the crowd can be rood, uninterested, or maybe even throwing things at you etc.. if you've had those experiences what did you do? How did you deal with those and how do you think players should deal when something similar occurs.

Let me just say that when HIM was warming up for Metallica here in Oslo, they got a LOT of booing (they probably got that many other places at that tour also). At one point the singer said "stop booing and save your voices for Metallica" tongue.gif they took it very well, but it looked very embarrasing. I think the important thing is just to keep on playing without being rude to the crowd even though they are rude to you.

We always go to a gig to do our thing - even though our thing may be is covers it's our way. If people don't like it we have fun anyway and our vocalist is a real funny guy he'll make it worth while.
I mean, if the audience is uninterested he'd say somehting like "You're the best audience we've ever faced!". If they cheer they havn't got a clue. If they don't react they confess to suck so what can they do laugh.gif

It's only happened twice so far once at a party with lots of teenagers, only "Song2" flew really well. Second was at pa party for an IT company where 3/4'th of the ppl went to another room to talk about work, 1/4'th who were a great audience stayed. And the IT nerds in the other room even complained we played too loud. Haha, such geeks. wink.gif

So, we're doing our thing, have free beer, food and lately even got paid and we're a bunch of guys having a lot of fun together. We're not aiming for the stars so we can laugh at a setback like that. We don't care.

only one bad experience that springs to mind, we where hired for a party at Epsom race course (UK) huge fancy place, it was someones retirement party, supposed to be 200+ people there, loads of booze, loads of food all laid on for the guests, party was starting at 8pm we are due to play at 9pm till 10pm, by 10pm 2 people had showed up, so needless to say we hadnt started, in fact I`d packed my gear away! annoyed coz no sign of the guy and not looking like we are getting paid! laugh.gif we had asked for £500 (UK stirling, £100 each)) and got the guy to hire out a large PA (it was a big place) which must have cost him some (no idea), 10.30pm and the guy who`s party it was arrives with 12 girls that he`s managed to talk into coming to his party from a local bar, they want party stuff, whats our opening number ??? Electric Eye - Judas Priest! laugh.gif

The band huddle together, "what we gunna do" me and the drummer say" no way this is stupid, I`m fed up and wanna go home" laugh.gif then the guy who hired us comes over and begs us to play, "just play anything" he says "I`m still gunna pay you look heres the cash", so .......... guitar back out the case, run through the set as quickly as possible, take the cash and go home!

Probably the worst gig I`ve ever played, but probably the funniest, we just treated it like a paid rehearsal.

I believe it's important to understand the nature of the gig,are you there because of the crowd
or the crowd is there because of you.
In both situations player has to enjoy, here's why. smile.gif
You are invited to play on private party,so crowd has to enjoy the music.
But if player has a bad time enjoying it,the crowd will notice it and everything will go pretty bad.
And now,you have your solo concert, crowd came because of you.
Since it's your solo concert you are enjoying it 100% percents,
crowd is there to adjust, they knew what it was about. wink.gif

And if someone throw a bottle on you...well,it's incident. laugh.gif

Yepp, I'm one myself smile.gif But I can't understand why people can't relax "of duty", why they have to talk about work on their free time. I refuse business related talk out of business hours.

There are good gigs and bad gigs, no rules there when and why, specially before the gig I at least don't know. What it is important to try to participate the audience needs if playing a festival. But bad audience can appear on solo night as well, so dealing with those nights is a thing to focus on too. In general the players should always give their 100% off course, but when the crowd is too rood, it can be very inconvenient for players, so in those situations the band should really stay focused on the playing and a show, instead of the crowd's behavior, while maintaining positive communication with the crowd.

I would like to add that type of music you play is filtering the audience a lot.
It's hard to see a carpenter(those are fine hard workers btw) at classical music concert etc. smile.gif

Player should not respond to individual crowd members that don't like the band and feed them by acknowledging their presence there..There will be individual/group crowd members that don't like the band (and a lot more that do like it) but if whole crowd is against the band then the band is playing in a wrong place..Just focusing on giving a good show/performance and ignoring (fools) is the key smile.gif
