In the Fast Solo (not the one in the interlude) in Master of Puppets towards the end of the solo, about 8 bars in, there is a really crazy sound screamy note that sounds kind of like a harmonic w/whammy bar. How do i produce this note? Its not an artifical harmonic or even an ordinary bend. How do i get my guitar to shriek like that?
Any input is much appreciated, even if you're not sure wink.gif

Hey, it's like you say, a natural harmonic on the 3 fret on the g-string with whammy wink.gif

The way Kirk does it is by pulling the high e string off of the fretboard somewhere on the guitar. That makes a really high pitch sound, but it would probably just be easier to do a whammy harmonic.

I looked through a guitarpro file i grabbed of it, and there was a comment about it there:
It says something about Kirk dragging the high E string off the fretboard and grounding it on the neck pickup.

Edit: Just noticed that basically the same thing was posted before my post smile.gif

You get the same one off the fretboard towards first pickup...but you can play it on 3rd fret easier...

Be aware of the fact that some types of frets don't allow you to do that off fretboard trick,
specially on lower frets.
Harmonic on 3rd fret G string is another way of doing it,yep wink.gif

Is it my equipment cos whammy harmonic on 3 fret g string doesn't sound like what Kirk does in the solo?

Might be the sound/equipment or you're doing it wrong, technique wise. unsure.gif

I was fairly sure that Kirk fretted the string on the pick-up and whammyed it.
I don't think a whammyed harmonic sounds the same.

Of course I don't wanna sound arrogant but I really don't believe it's the technique atleast there as clean as possible... unsure.gif I think mine makes just a little bit higher or more treble voice unsure.gif

Well if you're doing it right, then the problem is about sound, gain,EQs etc.

[Emphasis by me]

QUOTE
Is it ture that you broke your high E string when recording the solo in "Master of Puppets" when you hit that crazy high note toward the end?
-John Mulder

I didn't break the E string; I accidentally pulled the string down and off the fretboard. I actually fretted the string on my bridge pickup, creating a 27th or 32nd fret or whatever it is. It was just one of those happy accidents that was too cool to get rid of, and I've not been able to recreate it since.

My tab book says he frets off the 17th and grounds it for the squeal and whammies. I can't do it.

Here are some options:

...so he often played an artificial harmonic when playing the song live to substitute.
