Where abouts in the finger is the pain? just the tip of your finger? or the whole finger??

My guess is that if it hurts while playing the guitar you got the injury from playing the guitar. So take a rest for a few days.

some things that helped stop my pinky hurting were: using less pressure on hte fretboard and doing slower, longer warmups

and you say the pain is only when you play the guitar? has it always been this way, what I mean is are you only just introducing your pinky into your playing? or is it something thats just started to happen.

And another thing- how are you practising? Stood up with high/low strap, sat down with guitar on right leg or with guitar on left leg in a classical position?

Yes I have had exactly this symptom - and the fact that in only hurts when you are playing is (to me) proof that you got it while playing. Take this very seriously and read more here:

mine used to hurt. the joints. in fact, most of my fingers did at the joints. I use my pinky a lot, even bending, so it was the worst on my pinky. it was from overdoing it. it went away when I did what others here have said to do. I suggest also tuning down to e flat for awhile, and maybe going to 10-46 strings. I like heavier strings, but 11 is a bit tough on the pinky I think. I play about half the time in e flat and half the time with standard turning, just to not overtax my fingers. and I no longer have any problems. and probably nobody uses there pinky more than I do, at least nobody I have seen here. although I noticed David using his on his glam song at the top of the neck.

I suspect that after a time this becomes less of an issue for most people, as they get more strength to support the joints. I think a lot of us here try to learn so quickly, that we overdo it before our hands are srtong enough to handle the stress.

I might also suggest playing slower. I slowed down as I accepted that I would never be worth anything until I did. but I found that also that trying to play faster than you are ready for is tough on the joints.

edit: typo and added a bit.

regardless of what is causing it, you have to lighten up, in some fashion, at least for a time. you have no other sensible choice. I had a sore knee for 2 years from not learning that lesson (running). your body is trying to tell you something. it probably is not serious, but you could make it so.

This is what I like to do, take the guitar, sit straight and close your eyes. THen play some familiar tune. All the time try to play it slowly and don't worry about speed, just to play it propely but very slow. During that time of playing concentrate on your whole body's muscles. Feel if any muscels in the arm are being tensed. You can localize the problem very quickly that way.

I had a problem with pinky not so long ago.
I happened on gig...agnail...hurts like hell ohmy.gif .
Listen to advices above, sit straight, relax as much as possible
and play some easy random stuff.
Perhaps you were doing some nasty licks unprepared and
now pinky needs some time to recover. smile.gif
