I'm curious. Some folks run through a separate pre and power amp. What does that configuration get you? Is there some technical advantage? Or is it ease of use (inserting an effects loop)? Or is it just the flexibility of customizing your tone (mixing and matching units)?

Guitars: ESP Semi-Hollow Eclipse, 1984 Ibanez Roadstar RS440, Peavey T-60, Daisy Rock Rock Candy Custom
Amps: Peavey Transformer 112, Epiphone Valve Jr head with custom 2x12 cab
Pedals: Boss TU-2, Budda Bud-Wah, Chuck Collins Harmonic Percolator clone

Good question.
I personally use a pre -> power amp configuration because i find it way more flexible, and indeed, customizing the tone i want. It's alot more messy cable-wise though..

Guitars: Schecter Stiletto Classic, Jackson SLSMG, Ibanez RG-380 Japan, Gibson Les Paul Studio

Amp: Marshall JMP-1 -> Rocktron Velocity 100 -> Marshall JCM-900 Lead 4x12

FX and stomps: T.C Electronics G-Sharp, Korg SDD-1200, Emma Transmorgrifier, BYOC Tribooster, GGG Green Ringer, Dinosaur Overdrive, Voodoo Lab SuperFuzz, Sovtek Bassballs, Line6 Tap Tremolo, EHX Screaming Bird.

It's specially good when it comes to direct recording,
you carry only preamp
Plus you can combine different brands/models of preamps and poweramps.
But as Trond said,cables. biggrin.gif

The cable thing can get a bit messy, specially if you have a big rack with a lot of equipment, and it is no fun to look for a broken cable in such a rack, specially not if the cable dies while you play live. On the other hand Muris and Trond are absolutely right, you can customize your sound better with a Preamp/Poweramp combination since you can choose whatever you want.

Guitars: various Gibson Les Pauls / Gibson J 45
Amps: Mesa Boogie Tripple Rectifier / Triaxis / 2:90 Poweramp / Rectocabs
Effects: Rocktron Intellifex / Rocktron Xpression
