How do you find the time to read like that? Good grief.

Some of my favorites along the way:

Hemingway - For Whom the Bell Tolls (I like it more than farewell and separate, sue me tongue.gif)

Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughter House Five and Breakfast of Champions

Irvine Welsh - Train Spotting

Those are all that really spring to mind as I don't read too terribly much unfortunately.

Oh.. They're just too many.. But the Top List would look something like this:

George Orwell - 1984
Ken Kissy - One Flew Over A Coockoo's Nest
John Steinbeck - Of Mice And Men
Joseph Heller - Catch 22
Fyodor Dostoevsky - Brothers Karamazovy
Fyodor Dostoevsky - The Insulted And Humiliated

I think those are my favourites because I've read all of them at least 5 times each :] All of them are real masterpieces :]
Come to think that I'm a book addict it's a shame I've read them only 5 times each...

Hristian

P.S. Stevie you should really try something else and you'll see that reading books is the best thing you can do besides playing guitar. It's way better than watching stupid movies(i hate every single movie that's out there) and watching TV(I hate this too). There are such great minds that have written such great books that there's surely something for you.

P.S.S. I hate Dan Brown.. I hate him, Baldacci, Graham, Jeffrey Archer, Michael Connely and all those stupid criminalystic "books" that just don't have anything written in them. And I hate it when books make people stop thinking instead of making them think... (And that's what these guy's books do).

Great books Nobody. especially Heller and Dostoevsky. They are amoung my faves aswell. I'd also add To Kill a Mockingbird and my all time favourite book is actually........Green Eggs and Ham. I know I know but it's the one book that always makes me feel happy. I read it to my nephew over the phone all the time. smile.gif

Robert Jordan is the pen name he assumed based on the protagonist of For Whom the Bell Tolls!

And also Where the Red Fern grows, even though I aint half the country boy I used to be, I read this book once every year and it makes me cry ever freakin time.

I don't like many books, but the books that dig in below society and reveal it's flaws and impending downfall, I really love.

Oh yea, did I mention "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. Got to be the best book of all time right there.

Yes To Kill A Mockingbird is something I should read soon. But first I have plans to get Gogol's Dead Souls and Dickens' Great Expectations.
By the way I hadn't heard about Green Eggs and Ham but I just googled it and it sounds really funny biggrin.gif Maybe I should get it to read it to my nephew. She's one of the things I love the most :] She even wanted a guitar for Christmas so that she can play too. Ah tomorrow I'll phone to see how that kid's doing :]

P.S. shellshock then you should definately read One Flew Over A Cockoo's Nest! I though that there is nothing better in this type of books than "1984" until I read this one :]

Dead Souls is a must Hristian. Also as you like Dostoyevsky - Crime and Punishment. A bit more up to date Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipeligo is wonderful but grim and not an 'easy' read but imho one of the better books of the 20th C.

I'd also add Joyce's Ulysses to the list (and maybe his 'The dead').

Two book that I love though - and maybe a bit obscure - Georges Bataille 'Story of the eye' (not for those under 18 though) and Maurice Blanchot's 'L'arret de mort'. My fav books though change pretty much monthly/weekly.

Cheers,
Tony

one unusual read for me was an autobiography (dont particularly like them), it was Scar Tissue by Antony Kiedis (RHCP lead singer). Chilli peppers have always been one of my favourite bands but it was interesting to read of how much of a rollercoaster of addiction and recovery this guy has been through. interesting stuff.

Actually I'd recommend all of Dr. Suess....Green Eggs and Ham of course, Horton Hears a Who, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish, The Cat in the Hat...I could go on and on. These were the books that taught me to read when I was little and I still love them. I bought my nephew the complete set for christmas. He's 3 and he loves them. smile.gif

I haven't read Dead Souls but Dickens is great. And as Tony stated Crime and Punishment is great and well if your going to read Russian literature Solzhenitsyn is a must. I have a friend who is doing his thesis on the Gulag and he introduced me to Solzhenitsyn. Heavy stuff but just amazing.

Ah here you are!
(Couldn't find this topic for ages biggrin.gif)

Wow one advice to everyone who has Dickens' Great Expectations - don't start reading it unless you have an absolutely free day!! I had to go to the university, I had to study, to eat, to play my guitar more. But no! I just read the whole book without leaving it for more than few minutes! Man it was great! :]

rokchik, this is the first time I hear about Solzhenitsyn and I have no idea how to translate it to Bulgarian so that I can search for his books :/ And being a heavy think to read isn't a problem. Most of the russian classics write in a not too easy language but that's something I like about them :]

Oh and I just remembered that my nephew is 7 years old. Maybe she's kind of old for these books biggrin.gif But I'll definately try to make her read something biggrin.gif

Cheers,
Hristian

i hardly ever read, only when we're forced to at school, but the only books i have ever read without being forced would be Harry Potter books.
