Hi guys,

My rig currently consists of an Orange Tiny Terror amp and PPC112 cab, and also a Roland MicroCube. I have recently been getting into playing more metal type stuff; Tool and Metallica; and the Orange's overdrive does not quite get into that territory and the Cube is OK (for its size) but is of course a bit small scale. I want something that produces a real dark chugging sound on palm muted riffs. I am looking for something that will give out good tone at home practice levels. I am still a beginner.

So recomendations pls, either for a low wattage high gain metal combo or head, or for a metal pedal to go with the Tiny Terror:) Price limit for the amp should be about 1000€. I had been thinking about the Randall RM20 head with some Mesa like preamp module, or maybe Orange Rocker 30 (not sure if this really does go all the way to 11), or even Peavey 6505 (this is 100 watt head and I assume that it will get no where near its potential in home practice scenario....). On pedal front I had been thinking about the EH Metal Muff with Top Boost....

My opportunity to audition is very limited.

Thx,

For pedals, how about the BOSS MT-2?
The EH Metal Muff will also do it's trick offcourse.

Hmmmm...yeah, seeing as you are still a beginner like you said I definitely think you should buy a new pedal instead of a new amp. They are a lot cheaper and you can still get a great sound out of them if you use one with your Orange Tiny Terror.

I'm not a big fan myself of the Tiny Terror but I'm positive you could manage the sounds you're looking for.

I'd cut out a fair bit of the mids and you'd get a good drive if you first gain the Tiny Terror up and then add a (wild) OD pedal, or a distortion to push the already overdriven amp further. A 4x12 could help aswell.
That as a TRY. I don't have the Tiny Terror and I've only played it by itself through a 4x12, no pedals, so it's only assumptions on my part. ;-)

For amps I would suggest a Line 6 Spider. If you have the money possibly a Peavey 6505 or a Line 6 Vetta.

Thanks. Have u used the MT-2? In general people seem to think it is not as good as the EH stuff...whatever that means. How is you Danelectro Fab Metal?

I have also been thinking about maybe a real tube distortion pedal (bascically a high gain tube preamp) like the Blackstar DistX. Seems to have good reviews and apparently is quite queit and does not need a noise gate...

Yeps. The Terror has this funny tone control, so u don't get 3 knobs for treb, mid, bass, instead u get only 1, if you turn it 1 way it cuts the treb and leaves the bass, if you turn it the other it does the opposite, if it is in the middle you get I guess a flat response...so I would need a pedal in order to cut the mids:) I have listened to some Orange and Terror clips on the net and I think the 4x12 might help to push it further over the edge than my current 112, but then that will be almost a grand as well... But then again if I was sure it would make the difference I would just buy 4 Celestions and build a cab around them:)

I've tried the MT-2 yes, and i thought it was a great and versatile pedal that sounded good in most amps. I havent had that much experience with the Muff, but there's no doubt that it kicks butt.

The FAB metal pedal is WAY better than it's price will say. It's only 14$, but you can get it for even 9$ new on eBay.
It sounds good if you have a good and versatile preamp/head/combo. But if not, it's kinda limited what you can do with it.

Never tried the Blackstar though..

...or, buy the Boss ME-50 and start tweaking in the sound with that. I think that would be a quite complete setup. Tiny Terror, Boss ME-50, 1x12 cab.

Mike it up for larger events, I think you can manage with that for a long long time.

I have the MT-2. It's really good if you like a screaming lead tone with lots of gain and treeble. But I don't think it's the right pedal for you.

You're right. Go with the Metal Muff, it's GREAT for deep toned, chuggy palm muted riffs. The Krank Krankenstein pedal is also good btw, but I think you should get the Metal Muff.

And in addition, perhaps the ME-50 has an EQ to help you on that part?

Yes, am certain it does:) I am trying to stay clear of digital modelling since I have tried a Line 6 POD XT Live and was not too impressed, probably cos I did not know how to use it:) It produced "nice sounds" but lacking in emotion.. In fact that is why I bought the Orange in the first place, I made a conscious decision to travel down the "natural" tubey path instead of the digital bitstream....so to speak.

Hands down, Electro Harmonix makes THE BEST pedals at a reasonable price on the market today, in my opinion. Honestly, I wish I could own every one of their product line. I just bought a clone theory chorus/vibrato pedal, and it's amazing. I've owned the metal muff for a long time, and it is an amazing piece of equipment. Great for chugging riffs. You will not find a better pedal for metal.

Thx for the advice matey. Did you find the metal muff to be a very "noisy" pedal (obviously noise here means unwanted noise like hiss and hmm at high gain settings)? Did you need to use any some sort of noise gate with it? I was just thinking that if this noise is gunna be a problem with this type of pedal then maybe I should find 1 with a gate built in. What sort of amps did u use it with?

Any more suggestions on the amp front would be welcome:) Still would be interested to hear from someone who has first hand experience with a high power high gain amp lie the 6505 (around 100W) who could say if it is able to give out good tone at lower volume e.g. 7W...

Thats interesting, I already baught a EH LPB1 power boost thinking it would do this but to be honest it does not make an awfull lot of difference. Guess I need something a bit heavier...

IF you want something really chuggy and dark.. just buy a Digitech Death Metal biggrin.gif But be warned.. its extreme distortion, that could overdrive even radio biggrin.gif And you cant play anything prior to death/trash/black metal..

Btw. I stand for that Boss.. its is pretty flexible... Or just buy a multieffect and youľl be able to make sound you like..

6505 baby! I really don't like using fuzz pedals for solid state amps, but they sure do push tube amps nicely! I personally can't stand full out distortion pedals, I prefer something to just boost the dirty channel on my amp. I'm not up on conversion rates, but test out a 6505, or a XXX, the XXX is more versatile. Amp-wise I'm a Peavey guy, for thier great price and sound, Marshall's are just too expensive and don't have enough gain. Of course I've heard good things about ENGLs.

Definitely check Randall heads, they are built for chugging riffs indeed! Take some tube head and your calm. THey also have a great clean sound, Fender type, but darker.
