Well, a couple months ago, me and my friend decided to start our own music project (don't quite have the full line-up to classify as a band yet). I am, needless to say, in charge of the guitar department; he handles the bass and drums. We use Line 6 Toneports for recording the guitars, bass, and vocals (me and him tag-teamed the vocals) and programmed with the Drumkit From Hell in Sonar for the drums. These songs are our first attempts at making music. I am starting to study more into theory so that I can understand music more and be more able to create it. I would like advice on what to change/add/remove on these and future songs.

These are, of course, rough demos that spawned from just sitting around jamming (usually drunk for some reason) and a lot of these parts need re-recorded, but I'm too anxious to hear some advice before I try for perfection on the recordings.

We didn't really set out with any particular intent on what we wanted to create, but with us both being big fans of the more extreme sort of metal, I guess it turned out primarily death metalish, but a little bit of our stoner rock side comes out in other songs. A lot of what needs done to these songs to finalize them is just adding some lead. Since I don't understand too much about theory, its hard for me to even know what it is that I've written and what scales/etc would go well with it. I guess I'll be happier once I can show off with some good solos. I mean, I'm able to play more complicated stuff that other ppl have written, I just need to have the ability to write music that is up to my skill level of playing.

"Death Awakened" - This, I would say, has to be our most completed song so far. It's simple, but heavy with what ppl tell me is a catchy melody. As far as content, I'm nearly satisfied with this song. The sustain on the guitars is lacking, and it sounded a lot better when I played the riffs on my 6505 because of this. A couple minor mess-ups with the trem picking were bound to happen, but I'm waiting to rerecord those when I actually have gear that I don't have to struggle with to get sustain from. Vocals are horrible, and will be rerecorded when we get better equipment, as well as an actual vocalist hopefully!

"The Inevitable Departure of Life" - Simultaneously my favorite and least favorite song. I'm very happy with the somber intro and the rolling outro riff. Need to get some lead on what's in between and definitely re-record the crappy "solo" that I was planning on using Symphonic Orchestra to use some classical melody instead. Also got a new, much better sounding wah. Really need some advice for how to go about adding lead on this song, especially the second distorted riff.

"Death of the Messiah" - Our first song. Spoken intro is cut off because of the same reason as the first song. Vocals in dire need of re-recording also. I guess it's not too awful... well, maybe not.

"No Fear of Hell" - Newest song and tentatively titled. Another instrumental for the time being. Like other songs, need rerecording and lead.

Thanks for taking the time to listen! Advice is much appreciated!

Its good! Its definitely has many good aspects to it. I only had time to listen to the first two, and they were good for the style. Maybe some lyrics on the second, but its just an idea. GREAT first attempts at making music and best of luck to you in the future!

sick stuff man. It seems like you crossed classic Candlemass style riffing and Immolation style vocaling. Great deep gutteral voice, but you should bring it up more to the mix.

Thanks! That's really an awesome compliment because I have heard of both of those bands but never really listened to their music, so I know it wasn't a sub-conscious ripping-off of anyone laugh.gif

On the vocals: Yes, they definitely need to be more present, but I just can't bear to bring them up much more in the mix because they sound so bad now I think. Vocals on "...Departure" would really make it more interesting... either that or a whole lot of lead. Hopefully we can find a good full-time vocalist so i can devote my time to guitars and leave the lyrics and vocals to someone else.

Keep it coming!

I've only head the 1st song in the list so far. But i absolutely loved the intro! (maybe a bit too much vibrato on the notes at times, but thats just a personal preference) smile.gif

And the rest simply rocks and sounds great! It's most definetly like a deathmetal version of Candlemass.

It gets an A+++ from me.

Just heard the rest too now. Apart from some minor bugs here and there, there isnt much to critisize.
The sound quality as it is works perfectly as demos, and the songs are LOADED with cool ideas.

The solos can sound a bit directionless, maybe like you dont know what you should play, but they work.
All in all, this has alot of potential!

You called it perfectly. The solos and lead are where I'm weakest. I've came up with some better ideas already, but those recordings were part improv. I guess I really just need to study up on scales and how to match them with the existing riffs/progressions more. I'm just not 100% on how to do this... hell, I'm not even 100% on the key and scale of most of the things I've already written laugh.gif

I really appreciate all of your nice comments and opinions and really hope to keep getting feedback from you all.

Well as far as the actual Toneport, it's a Toneport GX. It's the newer one that's really small and pretty much only has a 1/4" instrument cable input, a 1/8" headphone-jack-sized output, and a big silver volume knob. Some of the guitars, as well as all of the bass and vocal tracks were done on my bass player's Toneport UX2.

As far as the amp models I was using in Gearbox, there were three at least. For some of the songs, especially the earlier ones, I used the line 6 preamp model called "Insane" for both lead and rhythm tracks. On the more recent recordings I switched to a couple preamp models from the downloadable Metal Shop package. I used "Cali Diamondplate" (modeled after a Mesa rectifier) for the rhythm track, and "Mississippi Criminal" (modeled after Peavey 5150) for the lead. I was using the cab modeled after a Marshall 4x12" with celestion g12t-75s with all the preamps cause I love the highs and lows on it, and was going back and forth between a close-miced dynamic and on-axis sm57.

If only I actually owned all that equipment for real laugh.gif

Anyways, thanks to everyone that took the time to have a listen and leave feedback. I've been working on adding some new lead fills and trying to totally rework solos with some newfound theory and improvisational knowledge, so hopefully I'll be posting updated versions in the near future.

We recently found some time to get together and work on some of these songs. We managed to redo the intro for "Death Awakened", so that's back, plus we got some experimental vocal ideas goin on in "The Inevitable Departure of Life", so feel free to check that out and leave some feedback.

I should be uploading a version of "No Fear of Hell" with vocals here shortly, so keep an eye out for that.

I just thought about what visuals i wanted people to get from the music and then tried interpreting it into a audio format. As far as technically, I just found different sound samples from different royalty-free websites, edited them individually, and then mixed them all in to make the atmosphere that I was going for.

The spoken intro on Death Awakened? What I did was i took the stock recording, lowered the pitch with my wav editor and saved it, opened the stock recording again and then lowered it even further down and saved a third version of it, and then i loaded all three files up in Sonar and blended them together... the idea pretty much came from the bible, if i remember correctly, where they said god's voice was three voices in one, or something to that effect.

Thanks much for listening and for commenting.... I'm still working with these songs and it's funny that most of the comments are about Death Awakened's intro because I've been planning some major upgrades to it in the near future (probably next week) that will make it much more epic!

Oh, and I uploaded a updated version of "No Fear of Hell" with some lyrics ... we're experimenting with some different vocal styles, especially around the 5-minute mark, so let me know what you think.
