i have a line6 toneport gx with gearbox software, and it works great as an interface but i'm finding it quite hard to get a tone i like out of the gearbox software it comes with. i'm not too fond of the preset tones it comes with and when i try to custom make my own tone, i can never get it just right. so as i was watching one of my favorite youtube guitarists gustavo guerra i noticed that he uses guitar rig 3 from native instruments for his recordings and i love his tone. when i checked out the native instruments site i also noticed that it had good reviews from a lot of my favorite guitarists as well and the samples it gives sound pretty good. so i was just wondering if guitar rig 3 is any good and if i should consider buying because i already have the money, or if i'm just not using the gearbox software right and should just stick to that keep working with it to get good tone.

I havent got that much experience with Guitar Rig 3, but i've used Guitar Rig 2 alot in the past.. and that one is definetly worth the money. Guitar Rig 3 has improved alot on the overall design and added alot of new features, so i have no doubt it's worth the money aswell.

I don't know much about the toneport, but if we assume it's good there could be numerous of reasons to why your recordings sound bad. I'm no expert but if I can guess...

Reasons for a bad recording
- bad guitar
- bad cords
- a computer that doesn't keep up

But even if the recording turns out well peraps you hear it through
- bad speakers
- bad headphones

Care to share one of your recordings with us?

I was looking at guitar Rig 3 also.. but ive descided id prefer a "real" sound.. getting the tone i want using equiptment rather then software.. i might still pick it up just for jamming.. sounds like an awsome program smile.gif

Well I don't find guitar rig 2 and guitar combos any better than gearbox, on contrary...But haven't used guitar rig 3...But I think its expensive....Maybe you should try to tweak the tone ports software a little more or use mic to get sound from your amp ?

GR3 is an excellent software.

You'll need a powerful computer though, and good ASIO drivers

ok well so far here is all the gear i have:

line6 toneport gx interface - it seems to work fine but i'm not sure if some of the issues i'm facing are because its not a good interface or if the gearbox software itself is'nt very good.

DELL XPS 400 computer - i really doubt any issues come from my computer. its very fast and has plenty of memory. i used to play games on it with graphics and physics set to maximum with no problems at all.

Ibanez RG2EX2 guitar - i also dont think there are any issues with my guitar. its exactly a year old and is in perfect condition. the pickups are the stock emg's and the plug in is fine. i use ernie ball super slinky strings as well.

Prolink Monster standard 100 cable - when i bought this cable guitarcenter automatically backed it with a lifetime warrenty so it should be a good working cable and i havent had any problems with it so far.

Gearbox software - it came with the toneport gx and at first i liked it because i could finally play directly into my comp but as i kept using it i started to realize more and more how none of the tones really worked for me. i did'nt like any of the presets and none of the custom choices really seemed to work well enough together.

Reaper recording software - it works fine for what i want. to just play to a backing track and record the solo along with it. it does what i want and does'nt seem to make a difference about how i sound through gearbox.

overall problems:

my pinch harmonics dont come in very well no matter how i change the settings.
it seems to make my playing seem a lot more stale than when i just play through my live amp.
not really any of the presets work for me.
even when i try to make my own tone, none of the choices really seem to work well together.
i like to play to backing tracks and i can never get a good tone that goes along with the songs.
it feels like my playing does'nt flow very well when i play through gearbox but when i play live i sound a lot smoother.

money is'nt an issue and i can always just return it if i dont like it for a full refund. there are too many specs for me to list in order for yall to compare the two so if you dont know much about the software check out its website to hear samples and read up on what all it has to offer. http://www.native-instruments.com/index.ph...3sounds&L=1

From your story you need something to get a good sound onboard your computer for guitar signal processing right? Than the GR3 is definitely something to try and buy. It is a mighty software, with more cool options than the Gearbox, that's for sure. I recommend taking a demo version first if possible tho.
