Alternate Picking, I have a problem

Apr 12 2008, 01:59 AM	GMC:er Posts: 616 Joined: 25-July 07 From: NY	So I've been trying to work on my speed, and I've noticed one big flaw on my alternate picking that's stopping me from going farther than where I am now. I have trouble picking cleanly while moving down. In ascending patterns I'm fine, however in descending runs I seem to screw up. For instance, if I'm playing: \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|--6--\| \|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------\| \|---------------------------------------------------------------------------------\| \|-----------------------------------------------------------------10-12-14------\| \|-----------------------------10-12-14----------10-12-14-10-12-14----------\| \|-----------10-12-14-10-12-14----------10-12-14----------------------------\| \|--10-12-13---------------------------------------------------------------------\| If the last note before I move one string lower is picked upwards and I move down a string to pick, I screw up somewhere. I either feel no resistance, hit the next string weird, and somewhere screw up. If I pick upwards there's no problem whatsoever. I think I could solve this problem with a metronome but I don't want to practice hours on end to fix a problem because I "think" it might work. Has anyone else had this issue? Now you must work on it specially to make it work. Work ONLY on the problem not the whole thing for a couple of hours. When playing watch ONLY the picking hand and minimize your motions and play everything perfectly. When you go to the point where you can't go any faster, stop and rest, and continue tomorrow. Another issue I've noticed is that if I pick down on a string, then move one string below that, I'll pick down on that too, in a sort of sweep.
