So it has come time to buy a new amp. Unfortunately I only have about £3000 ($6000) budget to buy head and cab. I know I can't get the best amps but I can afford these 3. What do people think of them and what one would you go for? Would you get something else? And no I wouldn't have a Mesa so please don't mention them but any others would be great smile.gif

Framus Cobra

EngL Savage 120

Hughes And Kettner TriAmp Mk II Alex Lifeson

Oh gawd, everytime I see an ENGL I spooge myself(exaggerating of course). I would definately go for the ENGL, but you can't go wrong with those 3, although I haven't heard much about the H&K. Of course I've had no expirience with amps of that caliber, I'm just going by sound clips I've heard from the interweb. The ENGL also looks the coolest IMO, the Framus kinda looks like an air conditioner. laugh.gif

Of those three amps, the Engl Savage is by far the best. The Cobra is awesome but it's a pure Metal Monster and can't handle other genres. The H&K has a very sterile sound with no soul at all. The Engl Savage is versitaile and sounds great , distorted aswell as clean. Are you going to buy a matching cab for the head of your choice? Maybe it would better to keep your Marshall cab and just buy a diffrent head because I think Marshall cabs are the best out there. This way you can spend even more on the head...

Well, it's a matter of personal taste. You should definitely try out each and every one one them before you buy. Can't really give you better advice than this.

The Engl and the Cobra are both great amps, it is for sure no mistake to get them, I don't know the H&K amp, so I can't say anything about that one. But what I don't really understand is... you don't want a Mesa, but you consider the Cobra? The Cobra is trying to hit the same sound as Rectifiers...

I think you wont regret it. An engl would be my first or second choice if given an unlimited budget.

Everything I read about the Engls is very positive. Sweet tones, and versatile. You may want to consider the Marshall JVM, the new flagship of their line. Everybody is raving about that one. It has four channels, including un-Marshall-like cleans, and other features never before had on any other Marshall. And, I have to agree with Marcus, you should consider Boogies. Many of their models are absolutely killer. By the way, what do you guys have to spend on amps over there, anyway? If I had 6000 bucks, I could buy two Dual Rectifier half-stacks, and then some...Hope this helps.

I'd forget about all of those and start browsing for a useful 50W amp, unless you're playing arenas.

Seriously, what are you going to do with a 120W amp ohmy.gif

We do play many big outdoor gigs as a band in the summer. Lots of Biker festivals and park parties. So the bigger amps are necessary. I have a 50W amp already.

Cool. Most ppl would go for a 100W just because, and then get stuck with the volume at 1.

I know too little about these amps so I wouldn't know. The Framus Cobra looks interesting though.

Don't get me wrong. The 50W amp is great for all indoor venues we play but it lacks that punch outside in a huge field. This certainly isn't an amp to use around the house biggrin.gif

On top of that, guys, and I've said it before, because I also bought into the 100 watt monster temptation...get an attenuator! 50 watts will still blow your head off with a 4x12 cab. The attenuator is the answer to all the owners of loud tube amps, who want to practice quietly at home, when we're done blowing heads off...including our own! I like the clean headroom of a high wattage tube head, anyway. The last time I jammed with a drummer, who could beat the crap out of a kit, I needed 100 watts!
