Should I Buy A Marshall Vintage Modern 2266 (50w)

Hi,

I am a noob and its my first post - go gentle on me.

I have been playing over a year now and making good progress (thanks to GMS obviously). I play mostly just in my room at the moment, and I play classic rock - Guns n Rose, Velvet Revolver, ACDC, etc, etc. I do occasionally jam with my friends, but, who knows what the future holds

As you can tell from my gear - I really like Slash and love his tone.

Now my ear is developing I have come to realize that my current amp is no good (being polite) and I have been looking to get a new amp - probably a tube amp and I was leaning towards just getting a small practice amp.

However, I have been offered a brand new marshall vintage modern 2266 (50W) - which is the 50w version of the amp my idol actually uses - for 25% less than the RRP.

Whilst it is more than I actually intended spending on it - this is a one time offer and only have a couple of day to decide if I want it.

So basically I am after everyone's opinion:
Should I spend the extra and get the Marshall or just stick to the original plan?

Thanks

I'm not realy a pro with amps, but I can give my opinion on the money part biggrin.gif

The budget you've made for yourself is prety important. It's not very wrong if you go over it a bit, but if you do that always it might become a bad habit tongue.gif . It is a one time offer, so that makes things interesting. I'd say see if the price diffrence is less important then the discount. I don't know how much the price diffrence is, but it's prety important. Well as I said I'm no pro with amps, so hear other opinions to please.

First of all- welcome biggrin.gif >and btw there's no need for the "go easy on me", this isn't the UG forum wink.gif

I say: it may be a "one-time" offer, your idol plays it, get it!

It sounds like your already quite tempted to get it, but if someone you love listening to plays it, then chances are you're gonna love the sound of it biggrin.gif (makes sense to me ...)

I brought one of the v/m marshall amps home for 2 days.
It really was capable of some great tones, however I wouldnt mistake it for a really high gain amp.

Also. It worked for around 3 hours of playing time and fizzled. Sill dont know what happend. It just fell silent.

I think they built a little to much vintage into the one I had.

Good luck.
For what its worth it was a nice amp...when it worked.

That's a hard one to answer from the outside. There's a lot to consider here.

I'm a big fan of a bargain as a lot of my gear posts here tend to show. Even with a steep discount, you're still shelling out a hefty chunk of change. If you can afford it without much trouble anyway, I'd go for it.

The thing you'll have to think about is usability though. A 50w tube head in the bedroom without a master volume or an attenuator would be a painful experience, I think and I pretty much hear that Marshall amps don't sound that great til you're pushing on them at least a little.

I tottally agree with you DeepRoots, I love Slash's Tone too and if I could replicate it and make it sound good with that amp, I dont think id hesitate to buy, but then theres the money issue. I dont think you mentioned the price difference of the two amps you were planning on buying, so if you could post that thatd help out alot, if it were my decision.

I live in the uk. I originally planning on spending £300-£400. Maybe a little more. Depending which one was going to me the tone I want. I can get the 2266 for £520. I can also get a similar discount on an orange cab 1x12 or get a 2nd hand Marshall 2x12 from a friend

My advice - don't rush it. Try before you buy, take your main axe with you, and do some 1-3h hour playing session with it when it is crancked. Then you'll be bale to make the final judgment.

Hi

Got to play the Vintage Modern and it does sound sweet - it will take time to dial in the tone but I am sure I wouldnt regret it.

So just when I had talked myself into parting with my cash. I was offered a similar deal on an Engl Thunder 50 head - the guy said this one will be better for me.

and on hearing it - that too was amazing. It is a similar price. So whilst I am not back to square one - I am just not sure what amp to get.

So would really appreciate everyone's input - Engl Thunder 50 versus Vintage Modern

please help

thanks
