Hey GMCers! As most of you have already heard, the new Metallica album is coming! First I want to say that I am a HUGE fan of Metallica. There is always a band that marked us in our lives, and in my case it was Metallica. I am a drummer (and wanna-be guitar player, which explains my being at GMC biggrin.gif ) and even though he is for sure not the best drummer in the metal world, I used to try to copy Lars' style, and try to follow every Metallica song with my drumset and some headphones.

So I love Metallica, but even though my support for this band has not changed since I started listening to it when I casually bought Ride the Lightning (I remember I was 12 and I bough that album because I really liked the cover art! tongue.gif), the reality in my case is that every thing they did since the Black Album is just not good, or better say, it does not fulfill my expectations. I have been waiting for years for a new Black Album or a Master of Puppets, and I am not saying that I hated Load, Reload and St. Anger (actually, I think St. Anger is very weird, you can say that they were experimenting, but some of the stuff is just weird) but I am just saying that even though I have all the albums and all the stuff you can imagine about Metallica, I just do not listen to any of the last three albums. I never feel like it.

So my questions is, do you think there is a time when a band reaches its peak of creativity and everything goes down from there? Again, some of Metallica fans feel "betrayed" because the band members changed their style; cut their hairs, etc. I just do not mind about that, after all, we all change as years go by, right? I am saying that with the latest stuff I just do not feel the excitement I feel when I listen to the older stuff (including the pretentious And Justice For All and its never ending riffs! biggrin.gif )

Probably we all change with time. I started to really like bands like Pink Floyd and guitarists like Mark Knopfler for example only after some years of being a metalhead.

Metallica is and will be one the most important bands in history; I just wish I could refloat my excitement about the band. Kind of like a 25-years marriage, right? I mean, I love the band, but I just do not feel any passion any more! biggrin.gif

Let's see what happens with the new album.

Take care.

Juan

Well, I must say that I love some songs from Load, Reload and I can listen to S&M concert for hours. But maybe that's because I am younger, and so most of their discography was already out when I started listening them. I was fascinated about all these albums when I started listening to them, so the "waiting for the new album" and "big hopes and expectations" wasn't there.

I was expecting more from St.Anger for sure, but in that time I listened to Blind Guardian 24h/d:)

Many people don't like that metallica isn't "true" anymore. That they are not smelly hairy metals... I agree with You Juan, that we all change, and it would be a shame if metallica would be the same, not changing... How many Master of Puppets can be done?
I also think that such attitude is working against as all... Tomorrow I will listen to metallica in Chorzow and what will I have to hear before them? Machine Head and Mnemic... Why these bands are there? Their music isn't anywhere near metallica, they are the "hard guitar killers" and to tell the truth I don't want to listen that kind of music on that concert. It is a metallica fest, a celebration of their music, and they invited such bands for people that need uber hard one riff playing, that metallica won't give them anymore..

Anyway I hope to hear some new songs tomorrow, if it will happen I will surely share my feelings about those.

I dont know, in my opinion Metallica was catapulted to success due to the great albums they made with their first five cds but have been riding off that for the last decade. The fact that St. Anger, the worst album Ive ever heard, debuted number 1 in 30 countries and won a grammy just shows that the name Metallica means more than the quality of music they produce. It makes me sick to be honest. I dont think they have it anymore, they can only keep putting out garbage for so long before the rest of the world catches on. I guess we can only wait and see, but if its even half as bad as st anger Im giving up on the band. Theres alot more great music out there that I dont need to waste my time listening to a bunch of multi millionares pretend to be a metal band.

I'm a huuge Metallica fan too. Metallica-books litterarly taught me how to play smile.gif

But i must admit that i dont have high hopes for the new album. I will never get tired of the first 4 albums, and after that i liked everything up untill and including Load (there's actually some brilliant songs there). But Reload was where it stopped for me. I cant find a single song on Reload that i can finish. And St.Anger was an abomination.

To be honest, i dont really mind if the new album will suck. (Offcourse i wouldnt mind if it turned out great). I will stay a fan nomatter what just because of the timeless first albums.

Ahh Metallica, probably the most loved and most hated band out there tongue.gif

I always thought they got caught up in their own hype and that's when things went downhill. I enjoyed the Black Album but since then only the occasional song. I would love for them to get back to their roots and be the thrash band we all know and love, but I'm not holding my breath. Although I would love to be wrong on this one smile.gif

I can't remember of a band that stayed active for that many years without changing.

To my taste the perfect metallica age is done by master of puppets, and justice for all and black album. But if you ask me I prefer load and reload to kill em all. I love half of ride the lightning and can't stand half of it.
So at least for me, their initial changes were for good rolleyes.gif

But they kept changing. I don't see that as selling themselves. If you think for the "selling" theory I would say that black album was the one they did it(not load), but I see no one saying is a bad album.

this pretty much sums up how i feel. they know people will buy anything that says metallica, so they just keep making crappy records. i gave up on metallica a long time ago, their just egomaniacs who are only doing this to make a quick buck.
they'll keep making garbage, but i wont buy it. and neither should you.

My hopes aren't particularly high at the moment. I think they CAN pull it off. I think the "new song" and the "other new song" were fairly bad, but Trujillo I think said they won't be on the album. Also in the preview video someone linked to a few days ago, it sounded okay at best (not crazy about hetfield's - one of my favorite metal singers - current vocal style or lyrics) but that may just be another thing that won't make it on the album or it might be a great song that I haven't heard enough of to judge biggrin.gif

I think it'll be better than St. Anger but not as good as Load which itself is just a step under their best stuff. So two steps down from their best stuff I say wink.gif

I liked load because the riffs are so simple but heavy. Load is where James's voice began to get sliiiiightly annoying to me, which intensified on reload and then full force on St. Anger. Its not so much that he's annoying sounding (and definitely not on Load) but the lyrics got worse. However theres still a number of songs I really like on Reload, especially Low Man's Lyric.

In other words, if it's as good as load I'll be really happy biggrin.gif

I agree with everything you said about Jame's voice and the lyrics, except completely opposite. I loved the lyrics of St. Anger, and his voice was awesome in load, reload, and st. Anger. The lyrics were perhaps a little repetitive in St. Anger, but nonetheless I still liked them.

Wow dude, I hope thats sarcasm. If its not than "Im Madly in Anger With You" haha tongue.gif James vocals were off key at least a dozen times through out st anger. I think his best vocal performance was probably S&M. Figures his best performance would happen right before his worse. His vocals hit the top and then plummeted to the abyss hes stuck in now. Hes been off key every time Ive heard any of the new songs to

Okay I was there at Chorzow yesterday, and must say that good old Metallica still rocks! There were no new songs, they played only the good older stuff, no St.Anger also. They also promised that they will return to Poland next year, when they will be touring Europe promoting their new album, so most probably the whole tour that takes place this year won't show us to much new material.

I don't know what more I can say, all the guys were in brilliant form, both James and Kirk made only 1 small guitar mistake for the whole concert, James voice is also in good shape. All in all they played really well and hard, I think that it was my best concert till date. Can't say the same on Mnemic and Machine Head. I think those bands are on different quality level, and sounded rather boring to me, except few moments. Still, maybe that's because the sound-environment ( don't know the word in English for the whole sounding system ) wasn't to good. Even Metallica suffered from it a bit, because the vocals were to quiet at times, and bass/drums to loud. Anyway few more shows on that tour will be even better, as they will still have the inner fire to play, and get rid of the small "problems" like sound system.

Hey Marek! It is great to hear that you liked it! What about Trujillo? I had the amazing chance to see Trujillo in a BLS concert in the US, and it was pretty wild. I love his playing in Infectious Grooves as well (remember that band? it was great wasn't it? I still listen to it). They say that the soul of Metallica was Cliff Burton. Then Jason was always like "the guy that replaced Cliff". Even the band members kind of apologized after Jason decided to go. I think I am going to miss Jason playing at live concerts, but we will see. I have my ticket for the Reading Festival (it is going to be my first time there) so I cannot wait until August!

Take care!

BTW, I am going to give you guys a link shortly for some very interesting Metallica stuff, with Mustaine and James playing live back in 1982! Then we can talk about James' vocals! tongue.gif Let me upload this stuff into rapidshare or something like that and get back to you.

Hmmm, I have to confess that I always viewed bass in Metallica songs as an "addition" to James lead, Kirk solos and Lars drums... One of the albums was recorded with so quiet bass that it was almost impossible to hear it at all.. I also know that Trujillo is a great bass player, but I don't think that in the old songs he can "show of". Because of that when I had an opportunity to see James/Lars/Kirk instead of Trujillo, I watched them... Anyway maybe on the new album he will add some great playing he is able to do, to the songs.
