Hey Kristofer smile.gif

How do you find those 'forbidden' notes that make a solo sound cool in an odd way?

If you got the time... wanna check this out? This is something I improvised. It's s**t... I know. I need to improve my improv.

I just don't know where to start... People have given me tips, but it's overkill you know. I have so much information that I don't know what to use. Maybe finding forbidden notes is a good start?

Another thing: do you believe in a higher force? Like God or LOA? You really have something special about you and most of the time I see that in people who believe in something. I'm sorry if that sounds gay tongue.gif it's not my intention!

Thanks for reading!

I know this was a q for Kris but I'll provide my opinion.

First, you've got to have a scale, let's say a minor scale, ABCDEFG.

Now, there's many ways to do this, one thing is called a chromatic passage, which in my opinion should be shredded away much faster than the note you end with, preferably with a cool effect like a bend or slide etc. A lick containing a chromatic passage could be:

E)-8---5----------------------------------------------------------
cool.gif----------8---5--------------------------------------------10---
G)-------------------7---5-------5------------4-5-6-7/12^14~-
D)----------------------------7-------5-6-7-8--------------------
A)-----------------------------------------------------------------
E)-----------------------------------------------------------------

First you have an easy, common pentatonic lick. Followed by a chromatic passage (in letters they are: G,G#,A,A#,B,C,C#,D slide to G, bend up to A)

Here your "forbidden notes" are A#, C# and G#. You could get like a nick diagram paper and write down all notes in a scale, and that way the frets that aren't marked contains notes outside of the scale. You can use them in many ways, like the example before, you can hit it and then very quickly hit a "neighbour" strong note. Like (in A Aeolian aka A natural minor scale) G# then quickly hammer A. That way you get a kind of jumpy sound which is rather cool.

If you chose a chord progression that suits a minor, and then use a whole tone scale, you'll encounter forbidden notes and get a spacy kind of sound. You can of course put even more theory into that, but it's a start.

Have a nice day, I hope you don't mind my opinion Kris.

Thanks man smile.gif

But sometimes these notes don't seem to fit in. I don't know why. Could it be that I play them too long or are some notes just out of the question?

The thing is that these notes are out of the scale, you don't expect them to come, if you take a forbidden note and play it long enough with really much emphasis on it, and then go back to the scale you used before that scale will be really out of place. This is what I know and have discovered. I always test to see if I like it or not. I can't just think oh yeah, I'll use a forbidden note and then play an awesome lick. I don't have that knowledge.

I never use 'forbidden' notes in a melody, only as a passage or to get the feeling: what the f.. aah yeah!

Hey Sonofdestiny - welcome to GMC! smile.gif

First - I edited your post. This might seem a little drastic since the word you used almost could be considered as academic therminology on some other guitar forums - however we have managed to keep a very good language level here at GMC thanks to a "zero tolerance" level.

I liked your improvisation - cool tone and some melodic ideas! smile.gif I would advice you to experiment a little with pauses and silence in your improvisations to create more contrast. Also - I think the mix could benefit form some "low cut" equalizing.

Regarding your question: When I speak about forbidden notes - it is a very simplified way of looking at more advanced theory. I could have started speaking about #5ths and modes etc. However my own theory studies as far as scales and arpeggios go - have always resulted in me adding a few notes to the standard scales which I already knew.

Therefore, to make a lesson (which focues on a solo or something I wrote) more digestable I usually choose to go for the more simple explanation. However, if this doesn't cut it for you - I suggest you check some of the theory lessons we have got at GMC. These will give you a more in depth explanation of what's happening.

I hope it helps! smile.gif

PS Thanks Osax for the awesome replies!

I actually made a lil' silly improvisation on the subject at hand. I added some 'forbidden' notes and some chromatic passages. Enjoy.-'Music'-

@ Kristopher: ahh sorry man, I really should stop using these words, it doesn't exactly make me sound tough, does it? tongue.gif

What do you mean by 'low cut'?

And not to be an asshole, but you didn't answer my question about what you believe in! biggrin.gif If it's too personal or if you are too busy, never mind, but I was really wondering about it smile.gif

@ Oxac: You really use those notes well biggrin.gif I like it! Thanks!

Couple of questions... What kind of delay have you got? What are your influences? What is the music style you're playing in this jam?

Sorry for being such an interviewer, I guess I'm just really curious...

Sorry I missed this question... What is LOA? unsure.gif

I believe in a higher force - I just can't find any other explanation why I am so fortunate to live in a country which allows me fullfill my dreams and live as a free man. As opposed to dying at the age of 1 in Africa. smile.gif

Same here. I believe that a higher power is actually the most logical conclusion, rather then evolution.

@ Kris: Sweden sure is a nice country.

@ Sonofdestiny: I'm not sure really, I just use my line 6 guitar port. I think it was a digital delay, I used a tiny little bit of chorus as well. As far as influences goes... the backingtrack really. Every time I hear a backing track I hear small licks in my head which I've got to try out. And of course, paul gilbert, vai, Les Paul, Kris, Muris everything I listen to...

@ Kris: LOA means Law of Attraction. Check out my post 'The Secret', it's worth it smile.gif

@ Pi38: evolution could be the result of a higher force wink.gif Check out The Secret too!

@ Oxac: ahh...bummer. I was hoping you'd have a special pedal for it, cause I'm not buying line 6 stuff. And that influence of yours is great! That's what I have when I'm writing a song. Sometimes when I try to prepare a solo. I think it just needs some time before I hear all of them licks smile.gif

Thanks! biggrin.gif
