I'm just curious as to what constitutes an unacceptable topic of discussion. Religion? Politics? Warfare? Some interesting debates can be had pertaining to those. I think many questions can be answered when discussing these and other off-topic topics. I find this stuff interesting, but these topics are potentially volatile in nature. Still, much can be learned when such topics are discussed in an intelligent and mature manner. This is the off-topic forum, but how heated can debates be before the censor monster rears its ugly head? Should an age limit be imposed on certain topics? I'm always up for a lively debate, as long as it remains respectable. Just curious...

Well there was a religion topic here,I tough that was not good for GMC.I was wrong.GMC is a great community in relation to any subject. If it is a mature discussion and without any insults I don't see any problems, but maybe you should wait from some of the moderators to answer your question.smile.gif

Exactly as Nemanja has said really Frank, provided these topics can be discussed in a civil and mature way then there isnt a problem, unfortunatly the subjects you mention are always sensitive in different ways to different people and the written word can sometimes be taken the wrong way and easily offend.

An age limit on topics imo is not right for GMC, the whole concept of GMC is for every single member to be able to have involement in the community.

Ultimatly almost any subject can be discussed and available to view by every member here provided it sticks to the posting guidelines.

Although this is the off topic board, this is after all a guitar website, and there are enough websites where religion, war, sex and violence etc can be discussed, argued about, sworn about etc to your hearts content, why would we want that to happen here? and this is really the main point.

so to sum up, yes they can be discussed provided if kept in spirit with the GMC community smile.gif

Agree with both Chris and Nemanja.

What I would add is that some topics would catch my eye very quickly as a moderator: anything to do with illegal activities, anything that promotes sexism/racism/homophobia and intolerance generally. Having said that I don't immediately move to censor either the topic or the contributors - it depends on the discussion.

Discussion about religion/war/politics I have no issue with provided they're civil and don't just turn in to a flame war. Only thing people may want to think about is whether they're appropriate on a guitar/music orientated site even if they're in Off-Topic.

Age limits - errr - I can't see how that would work as a mod. Would I be expected to delete responses from people just based on their age? Very difficult to police and not a form of censorship I would like as it, for me, sounds rather Victorian. Further it may assume that a person's biological age reflects their maturity - something that I don't agree with. I know a lot of immature adults and equally a lot of mature youths.

As a moderator one of the major things that remains uppermost in my mind is that GMC as a community has members from a very wide age group and so threads, discussion and member behaviour need to be appropriate with that. If you look at the posting guidelines you can see that many reflect this.

Cheers,
Tony

I agree with our moderators, anything can be a good subject as long as we have a good healthy discussion over it, excluding of course some topics that are not suitable for forums and discussions in general. Afterall this forum works mainly with topics related to guitar and music material and it works pretty well. Didn't ever saw the need to discuss in-depth about politics or religion here anyway smile.gif

Understood, gentlemen. I'm new to the world of forums and topic discussions. I understand that there is a time and place to discuss topics other than those that are guitar-related; even in an off-topic area. I will defer to your judgement and experience regarding this. I realize that I come off too strong-willed every once in a while, but I mean no harm. I am not one of those who will personally attack anyone, regardless of how heated the debate becomes. But, I can reserve potentially volatile discussions for some other site.

My need to educate is sometimes overshadowed by common sense. The perception by some that I am trying too hard to hammer home a point seems to be somewhat misguided in some respects, however. If, for instance, someone is passionate about a particular band or guitar player, there can sometimes be no reasoning with that someone in regards to a contrary opinion. It can even bring about unnecessary strong feelings. I guess that's just human nature. That's why it's so difficult to have a civilized discussion on religion and politics.

My personality profile sometimes requires me to 'set the record straight' every once in a while. I can sometimes be absolutely right about something, and it turns people off, no matter how things are presented. I'll save my soapbox for another site. But, the other side of that is the unfortunate fact that some intellectual discussion on an off-topic subject will not be realized on this site. But, that's up to you guys. And, relax, you don't have to monitor my every move...the subject matter will be completely benign from now on.

If you are new to online forums and discussion boards you've found a good place for a gentle start.
A few times things heat up here too, but generally this is a cozy, comfy place. More like a bunch of friends with different opinions, as it should be. It's pretty common on Internet for things to get real, real ugly.
