Hey guys, wanted to get some suggestions on recording vocals with this mic through a Toneport Ux1 and using gearbox. I can't get any output from the dang thing. I'm connected via XLR to the Toneport but still nothing. It's supposed to run on phantom power. Did I buy a dud?

When I unplug the mic from the cable and tap it, I am getting some feedback. Does gearbox need to be upgraded? I switched to "microphone input" and am set on one of the vocal presets.

Any suggestions?

Just figured it out. The UX1 does not supply 48v phantom power. If you are in the market of a mic and have the Toneport UX1, DON'T buy one that requires this power sorce. Idiot at Sam Ash said it would work. Will be returning tomorow. sad.gif

Do people that work in music stores really know what they are talking about? I don't think half of them are musicians at all. Needless to say, I'm kinda pissed right now and need to vent. Fuel at 4.00 a gallon and I've got to make another trip and take time from work. I will be getting something from them! mad.gif

That's unfortunate, and only ux2 has phantom power.. sad.gif
Seller misguided you...I don't know is there a way to power phantom powered mics externally and use it in "normal" xlr jacks ?

Well, most sellers do know their gear very well and they are trying to mislead you in order to sell you the product. But maybe the guy simply didn't know. ANyway, that doesn't really justify that he told you that it would work if he doesn't know wink.gif

Return it and ask for a discount, talk to manager, make a confrontation.

Yes Bogdan but it may not be cost effective for the Sampson. Take a look at this example - @140USD. For that it may well be better to swop the Samson for a good dynamic.

However if you want to use a condensor Skenny you'll need to phantom power it. So then you're left with a choice of an external phantom supply OR getting a new interface that provides phantom. If you are any good with a soldering iron you could try making the external - here's some schematics.

Cheers,
Tony

Condenser mikes are generally better quality than dynamics, at least for things like vocals and recording acoustic guitar, so don't give up on them yet - some are self powered (have batteries).

For instance, the AKG C1000 is a classic entry level condensor that has battery power.

Thanks Toni and Andrew. I do understand that the quality of the condensors at this price point are better, however I checked out the Shure 57 against the Q7 by Samson and ended up buying the Samson. Thought it had a little more guts on the lower end with the same settings on the board. We'll see. smile.gif

shure sm57 is standard for recording guitars , and shure sm58 is for vocals...

But I'm sure you can capture some vocals with 57 too ..
