I have a chance to purchase a new axe and I`m stuck between the Jackson MGDX or an Epiphone Les Paul. I already have a Gibson-V and I`m leaning toward the Jackson as it has a superfast neck and Floyd Rose tremelo, plus a reverse headstock, which I think is really cool. Does anyone have any tips or advice on which I should choose and why? huh.gif

The jackson would be something diffrent in feel and tone but the model you mentioned has only a licensed floyd rose and I can't say that they are worth the money. I had a jackson with licensed floyd and it was the reason I sold it, it just could not stay in tune. Either you invest more money in a more expensive Jackson (great guitars) with an original floyd (they also come with top notch pickups) or buy one without a trem.

The Epiphone is an alright guitar but you don't want to go back to Epiphone when you already have a gibson...

The LP will be a lot easier to maintain and get to stay in tune, no hasseling with the Floyd rose type tremolo like you'll experience with the Jackson.

So for a cheaper guitar, the Epi LP all the way. You can easily tune to drop D if you want to try that out. Restringing to thicker, thinner strings is just plug n play, no tremolo that will need to be resetup.

If you're willing to spend more money I could very well say you should get a Jackson with a floyd rose, but for the cheap ones. Nah.

The Gibson is great and it sounds awsome but it`s a little uncomfortable to try and sit down and play because of the body. mad.gif

It depends on the pickups really. I'd choose a tremolo guitar for versatility.

Edit:

Unless it only has one pickup. that's rubbish.

Not to sound stupid but can you tell me the difference in "licensed"floyd rose and "original"floyd rose?

It'll stay in tune if it's set up properly. If you buy it, go to your local guitarstore and pay them to teach you set it up.

Original Floyd Rose tremolos are expensive but well crafted and they'll stay in tune even if you divebomb the hell out of it. Cheap fake floyds are made from cheap metal and break easily plus they will go out of tune from simple playing fast.

Mine is licensed, and I can dive without any notice of tuneout.

For me the best Guitars are fixed bridge, you just cannot beat them IMO smile.gif You got big sustain, tuneing stability, and most importantly you can pick up and play ANYTIME , no fuss wink.gif

What is your favorite style of music? Your two choices differ in some respects. The Jackson, with the licensed Floyd, will sound a little brighter, all things considered. The scale length is 25 1/2 inches compared to 24 3/4 inches for the Epiphone. The Epiphone will sound 'heavier' as a result.
But the Jackson gives you whammy bar opportunities, if you're so inclined. As far as the licensed Floyd is concerned, you may have to replace it with the real deal. I own a Jackson that now has the real Floyd, because it would not stay in tune otherwise. The licensed Floyds are not all made with case-hardened steel, so the fulcrum points tend to cause the bridge to 'wander', causing the out-of-tune problem. A real Floyd costs around 200 bucks. It was worth it to me.

mostly 80`s type metal but also blues and fusion.does the licensed floyd rose have a lockdown screw to hold in "fixed bridge"position until i can get the real deal?

Both are good brands, no doubt about that.
But i would be cautious about getting a Jackson with a licensed Floyd Rose. Some are good though, but some are just plain bad. But other than that, Jackson delivers great quality in both the budget and high-end series.

Since you already got a Gibson - and therefore a fixed bridge guitar - I say: go Jackson! laugh.gif

Jackson guitars are generally of good quality.
Just make sure you try the guitar first.

If you want to be able to block the floating bridge, may I suggest Tremol-No ?
The sexy thing allows you to switch between full floating, dive only and fixed bridge in seconds. smile.gif

Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.

If you like your Gibson and you need a cheaper similar sounding guitar to play sitting down, get the Epi. Epi Lp Custom is quite good in the 500$ range.

But if you are looking for something different from your V, save some more and get a better jackson with a real floyd rose!

Honestly, they wouldn't produce a serie of shit.

It's all about setting it up.
