Generally you mute the strings BELOW the string you are playing with your left hand.

You mute the strings ABOVE the string you are playing with your fat part of your right hand.

Simple and perfect explanation!

And that´s why Malmsteen´s playing is so clean. Due to his fat palm and fingers, it sounds awesome. biggrin.gif

Now seriously. What Mav says is correct. You should look for some lessons here on GMC. I remember when I learned it. It´s pretty easy. tongue.gif

If you look up some of the Legato lessons that Pavel did you will find some excellent demonstrations of string muting along with some pretty tricky legato skills to practice smile.gif

Funnily enough i had only heard of the whole "muting" thing a couple of times in passing on the boards and never gave it much thought.

Then i started jamming some funky riffs (also my first time exploring jamming with funk) and i felt that something was a little "off". I thought about it for a minute and then placed the fat of my palm (right hand) on the strings above those i was playing and voila! Suddenly the riff sounded complete, so much better.

Now i know that doesn't directly answer your question but i think it's important to show that muting, like most things with guitar, is the product of logical choices being made in order to solve simple problems. Now that doesn't mean everyone should be able to figure out everything by themselves! It just means that there is always hope and a way to get over the hurdles, never get discouraged!

Check out the lessons involving muting that have been recommended, and check out Mr.Milenkovic's tutorial when it goes live (it's bound to be good wink.gif ).

You'll be muting perfectly in no time!
