So, how do you guys do it? And is a normal camera (for filming) connectable to the computer and then you can record the video with good quality from the camera as well as good sound quality through the line in? First problem may be the webcam ... It is perfectly possible and indeed easy to sync up separate audio and video - it is actually the best way to make a decent video without some really high end equipment, most of the instructors do it that way. When I tried this initially with my webcam, I had enormous problems getting them to sync, and I concluded that the webcam was just unreliable in getting the video to be regular enough to sync up. Trying the same with a decent video camera and using reaper to record audio gives really good results. The killer tip here is the following: 1. You need a video editing program such as Sony Vegas. 2. When recording, you need to make a synchronization event - thats what the clapperboard is for. Something that visually identifies a point in time that a noise is happening. I clap my hands if I am in shot and on a separately recorded mic, or you can just strike your guitar strings quickly. 3. Open up the video in your editor and also import the separate audio 4. Now you have a couple of options: 4a. If you are recording sound on your camera as well, you will see that your video audio track should look similar to your other audio track - now you can line them up exact;y by getting it close then really zooming in and moving the audio track to match the other audio track. Remeber to mute the camera audio track once you have done this! 4b. If you don;t have audio from the camera as well, identify the audio spike from your synchronisation event, and line it up with the associated action in the video itself - keep trying this until you get a good sync. Sounds hard, but works really well in practice! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Yeah, pincacle is fine for this, sounds like you know the technique then! So I can only say that I tried it with a webcam and it was awful, but worked like a dream with a proper video camera

Well I ended up getting a Sony DCR-SR36E, with a hard drive, and I'm quite happy with it, it's really easy and fast to take the videos (.mpg) to the computer, it works just as an external hardrive, you copy and paste!
My laptops don't have firewire, so miniDV wasn't a good option for me, and the ones that record directly into a mini-DVD result in a file format (.VOB) that is not easy to work with and would have require conversions. So my only option left was harddrive, and one of the few makers that record on .mpg is Sony, so it was an easy decision to make once I gathered all the info. Thanks all for your help!! -------------------- Guitars:

If it is mini DV it should have a firewire interface, meaning you can pretty easily stream from the tapes to the PC entirely digitally. You can probably capture directly from the cam as well without taping at all - this is about as easy as it gets. IOF you don;t have a firewire interface on your PC you can add a card for maybe 20 - 30 quid.

Hey man, you can use miniDV camera for making video shots. Your motherboard must have firewire input, so you can connect the camera and stream the video to HD and capture it directly on your computer. This leaves computer with enough recources to work on audio. You can record your audio in DAW, or if you have line in on miniDV cam you can connect the guitar signal into it somehow.

Yes..I'm a villain bumping an old thread Any recommendations for transfering mini dv to the pc? I'm spying a mini dv on ebay and if i can get some info on how to transfer then i may very well drop in a bid- any suggestions? Link if possible Check if the cam has firewire (or usb) connection..I'm pretty sure it has firewire..If so you need a firewire card in your PC to transfer the videos (in real time).Note that firewire cards for PC are very cheap (I payed 10e for mine). -------------------- For GMC support please email support (at) guitarmasterclass.net

Something like this should be fine:
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quick...NavigationKey=0 And yes, it should work pretty much exactly like the USB one does - hook it up and the compute will recognize it. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

Yes it acts just like USB port (but with fatter pipe). Even when PC is turned on, and camera as well, it can be plugged in or out, and it will work fine.
