Interesting Article In Technology, "Never trust a Computer that you can't throw out a window"

Jul 15 2008, 10:09 PM	GMC:er Posts: 493 Joined: 15-October 07 From: Pennsylvania	Hey everyone, I saw this interesting article on CNN http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/07/15/bio.tech/index.html Among topics in it are questions like "What will be the role of technology in the coming decades?" "What are the consequences of producing a 'fountain of youth' drug?" It's really interesting stuff to me. Pretty soon they say we'll have computers that can out think humans on multiple levels It's also quite scary A wise man once said "Never trust a Computer that you can't throw out a window" Your thoughts? And I hope everything is always done the old fashion way: practice and dedication to achieve a certain skill, but then again, I am pretty cynical myself, so if humans made robots that started destroying mankind, I would probably just laugh. EDIT: This decade has seen almost no human progression, why do these scientists assume that that is going to change in the next decade? Especially progression THAT drastic, hell this one guy says humans will be non-biological by 2030, ok I take that back, a lot of this article is pure insanity, at least 1,000 years ahead of its time I would say. I think it's good that we are getting these issues out in the open. posing alot of "what If" questions is a good way to go about this. I think it's a great thing that we arent blindly rushing to create the "Miracle Drug" (please excuse the U2 reference) that will cure all diseases, but put little nanomachines in our bodies. What if we develope robots to do 50% of the available jobs in the world. Then most of the working class people that went to get technical training. will be out of a job. and then the whole system will be outta whack. because then there will be only the super rich... but they won't be able to spend any money because there will be nothing to spend it on... and so on the only people that are safe from this are primitive tribes in jungles and such. (kinda makes you wonder doesn't it?) I think at this point in technology we are walking into a dark room where we can't see anything, and these people want to feel around with our foot to make sure we don't trip over anything. versus running in blindly. cuz you never know... some little kid might put a bunch of marbles on that floor.... I would agree that this technology is more than 30 years off, but I do think its within my lifetime (I'm 20) look at this... 150 years ago people didnt know what a "factory" was 100 years ago we have factories all over the place 90 years ago we had planes flying around in the sky (the people that were born 150 years ago are still alive) and what would these people have said?? if someone told them when they were a kid that there are going to be flying "machines" by the time they are 70? word "machine" probably didnt even exist at that point! Development and technological progress is good and all, but i dont like the idea of robots one day doing most of our usual jobs, or even worse, being a part of us. It's a disaster waiting to happen. The stuff you are talking about in there is like word for word out of the book "Ishmael" lol, I think you should read it, it is really good. Like at one point the author askes "When we created the airplane, are we flying up, or slowly degressing down?" Which makes sense, because technology like that is slowly coming to what is in that article and like Trond said, a disaster waiting to happen. And of course in "Ishmael," he also points out like you said that people that live in the jungle/tribes etc, who live by "Mother Nature" are safe, while the rest of the human race, who live by "Mother Culture" will eventually collapse upon themselves. I might have to get this book then but yeah, I really do think we need to preserve what it is to be human. To an extent we already have cyborgs, people have hearing aids, and pacemakers. Technology is getting better all the time. Prosthetics are getting more and more advanced, it won't be long before prophetic legs work better than normal legs. Then the runners in the Para Olympics will be getting better times than runners in the normal Olympics. And I think it wouldnt be right if we were to, for example, put a little gadget in someones brain that has cancer.... Yeah it will cure the cancer, but what if it doesnt make them the same again? I don't think thats right. ps same goes for todays technologies... If an elderly person wont be the same after a certain operation, i think it would just be best to leave them be....
