Hi guys

I've had my guitar back from the shop and i'm still not 100% happy with it. They've sorted out all the intonation and did the truss rod proeprly now but one thing still bugs me and that's the action. so i want to raise the action where i'm getting little to no fret buzzing at all i'm not really bothered about getting a low action as i don't think having a low action is that important anyway. So my question is can changing the action bugger up the intonation?

Good question, but I'm thinking that - NO it will not - since the force from the strings will still be the same even if you raise them a bit and after you tune them it's all back to normal.

Ive done this a thousand times. If intonation changes it will be very slight if at all. I wouldnt really worry about it to muc and adjust the height where you want it to be.

1 question...Floyd rose, hardtail, kahler.....?

strat type, although it isn't a strat it works in the same way. It's a floating bridge on a PRS

If the intonation does change....
Grab your tuner.

plug in...

pluck string make sure it is perfectly in tune (open)
fret same string at 12th fret observe tuning. It should still be in tune.
If not adjust intonation screw on bridge until the string is the same open and 12th fret....
repeat for all strings...
done.

Dont pay for adjustments ever again.

The A and E strings seem to be the worst, the others aren't so bad, i could live with it. But the problem is if i raise these 2 i'll have to raise everything else as well looks like i might end up with a really high action.

I would definitely check the intonation again. Intonation is not very difficult to check, so there's no harm in doing it (specially for bass strings, sometimes can happen that one winding sort of "click" to another winding and intonations changes).

In what order should intonation and action be set? Should I set action first, or intonation first?

Intonation is done on the end, along with tuning, although it is not a strict rule of course.

Yes it will man. Raising=changing total length. string force=tune, not intonation. THat's total length of neck.

Edit:
and for the record, if you want a 100% result, you'll do intonation last.
Even changing to another stringdist. will mess your intonation up. It's a very fragile setup.
Also, you will NEVER intonate on old strings, because then your new ones won't be intonated. Alot of factors bro.

Edit again:
When changing action you also have to resetup your pickups, because of the magnetism kontra your strings.
My local guitargod says that this takes years (of experience) to do properly, so I'd honestly take it back to the shop.

Edit for language - Smells

Yeah always check the intonation last...But than again if you just got your guitar from the shop , maybe you want to turn it back for them to set it up like you wanted/prefered ?

Totally agree. Let's hope he asked them to set the action though- else he has to pay again.

Edit:

Well on second thought, they haven't done their job if the strings are buzzing. Reclamation!! biggrin.gif

What do you floyd guys recommend using to move the saddles back and forth when intonating?

I dont want to scratch them up. But I need something to push on them pretty hard since they are under tension and want to slide forward once the screw is loosened...

Hmmm.... That doesnt look like what I need. Perhaps I'm adjusting the wrong thing?

I have whats pictured. I adjust that screw thats under the strings. (nice placement, thats real handy) When I loosen it the piece under it (saddle?) wants to slide forward due to tension.

That piece is what adjusts intonation yes?

The tool you pictures looks like something that goes behind the whole thing. Doesnt look like it has anything to do with this adjustment.

What am I missing?

The tool is for floyd rose, what's your system? smile.gif

EDIT: This tool is letting you to unscrew the intonation screw (the one you point to) and then set the intonation by adjusting the tool and then tighten it back

Its a floyd.

I have a couple "floyd licensed" ones too. They have the same screw.

From that pic I cant see how something that attaches at the very back of the trem is going to move that metal piece when I loosen that screw.

I've tried loosening it and pushing back on it with a flat headed screwdriver blade but it'll scratch it....

I figured it out. The part I was moving is attached to that long bolt sticking out the back. That tool pulls on that bolt. Instead of me pushing on it from the front.

I just bought this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Floyd-Rose-Bridge-Into...%3A1%7C294%3A50

Thanks for the help!
