I saw this bumper sticker, thought it was cute, it said....

Having a smoking section in a restaurant is a little like having a peeing section in a pool.

Most places in the US ban it in public places, for sure in my town. You can carry a handgun though.

my addiction is coffee biggrin.gif.. i must say tho.. again i come back to my moderation comment.. i think that smoking in moderation is perhaps not as bad as we seem to think.. a pack a day is not moderation.. i will ask the question against soft drinks.. a case of coke a day would probably kill you faster than a pack of cigarettes a day.. high sugar levels + high amounts of caffinee.. huge intake of calories i would be willing to guess both are very bad in high amounts

Very few people smoke in moderation indefinitely. A lot think they will, but few don't increase the level after some time, way past moderation.

I don't know why people even put something like caffine or soft drinks here. I have exercised all my life, pretty serious. Always kept in shape. People with problems due to food have it more due to their overall unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise more than anything else. I don't eat fast food anymore, basically I have reached the age where I need to think about diet, exercise alone does not cut it anymore. But having had my smoking best friend die young of colon cancer, well, I don't think anything belongs in the subject of smoking, other than maybe hard drugs or sado masochistic kink. One of my sister's high school friends died of that.

They are legal because corps make money, and politicians are in their pockets. But cigarettes are just as insidious as anything out there. Jeeeze, you are putting hot toxic gas into your lungs when you smoke, why is that not crazy?

I remember this man around here, an ald acquaintance of mine, heavy smoker, something like 35 years old said>
"Life after 40 years sounds bad, but if theres life after 50 years... I don't want to know about it!"

I hate arguments about smoking, cos I have nothing to say that would make it sensible, I just like having a smoke.
But one thing I just don't get (propably I'm stupid) is people who feel so strongly against smoking, out here you can't smoke in public buildings anymore, so that leaves your own home and outside, and outside, the air ventilation is pretty damn good.

I for one don't care at all about my health and never understood why some people want to live long lives, but your own choice just like smoking.

Now, I'm going to roll my self a Pall Mall, without a filter, MMMmmmm... smooth! cool.gif

I am happy if you smoke, so long as you agree to pay your own medical costs for your entire life, and not force non smokers to share that burden with you.

Then you must agree that anyone into sports should pay their own medical care? Car drivers? People who enjoy a beer now and then? Weapon owners? Owerweight people? Everyone that deviates a bit from ... I don't know which... standard?

That's true. You don't smoke moderatly. If you smoke, you smoke. It's a drug and you are an addict. You will increase the intake over time.

Yes, spot on. IMO cigarettes and alcohol shoud be classified as drugs and not allowed for anything else but medical use, and I really can't see any medical benefits from cigarettes.

I disagree with you about the alcohol, my friend whom I've known almost all of my life, is fiftyish and drinks a glass of wine every night with supper not to mention that he has never been drunk a day in his life. Alcohol, if used responsively, is nothing to worry about IMO.

I didn't mean that those SHOULD be outside general care. On the contrary, those who need help should get it, regardless of what reason. I just tried to give examples of things that, with the previous reasoning, also should be excluded. Which I think is wrong.

Alcohol can have some positive effects, but alcohol also cost society enourmous amounts and human tragedies by it's side effects.

just if you smoke, make sure you quit by 40. and get exercise even if you do smoke. I smoked when I was younger, mostly bummed cigarettes to keep the number down. and drove people nuts who I bummed them from all the time. but I always exercised, mostly swam. I think that cleaned me out a bit, countered it. so at least if you smoke, get good exercise.
I still have good endurance, and lung capacity. A resting heart rate in the 50's. If I had not exercised when I smoked, I think it would have done me a lot more damage.

Well, those are some words I can relate to! I smoke pretty heavily, but I also run and go to the gym, so it really doesn't noticably weaken me in any way!

btw. is noticably a word? or did I just make it up? huh.gif

yes it does. you are kidding yourself. this is just simple science. it does several things that without question, will weaken you.

constricts your blood vessels for one. but even more importantly, your red blood cells latch on to carbon monoxide, and become useless for transporting oxygen. you are probably young, and your body gets by, but don't kid yourself.

I used to do triathlons when I was a smoker. and that is the reason I never got better than middle of the pack competitively. Wish I had never smoked, I missed out on some things because of it. I could have been competitive. But I understand how it is enjoyable to a smoker, and very very hard to quit once you are hooked.

Well, yeah gotta hand it out to you, maybe I used wrong words. Let me say it like this>
It doesnt prevent being in good shape but it does hold you back. One thing is for sure, you can better your running shape for example even if you smoke, but indeed it does hold you back.

I'm young, 18, been smoking for 1,5 years and excersicing at the same time, and for my own exoerience, right now I'm more scared of the "Ravages of old"(no offense to older gmcers), than smoking, eventhough it's not current for me right now. I don't really know why...
