Rusty Cooley is one hell of a shredder and he started at 17 i think. I started at 15 and aren't doing too badly.

Remember it's not the amount of years you've been playing- it's the amount of hours wink.gif

Jason Becker recorded his first album with 17 I think, and this album is really incredible...

I don't think age matters much, except that it is good to start young if you want to have a career before you grow older.

I am 40, and only recently started playing the guitar in earnest.
Touched the guitar at age 14, but haven't done much about it since.
Age doesn't matter, IMO.
I mean, I haven't been better than I am now! biggrin.gif

Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.

One can never be to old to enjoy the wonders of playing the guitar! I like this thread...makes me feel that much better about my age and desire to play seriously.

Zakk Wylde was 16, I believe.

...and joined Ozzy Osbourne's band with 19years? I don'think so
He got the guitar with 10 but stopped playing until he was 13 so he ''really'' started with 13 years...

Nope it doesnt matter how long or what age you started. As someone said in the topic, its about how much practise you put in, not how long you've been playing. Someone could of been playing 5 years, with not much practise and someone thats been playing a year can be a hell of alot better because they've put the effort it.

I've been playing 4 year, started when I was 16. And at first I didnt put much practise in, so I didnt really practise much. I've only being practising seriously in the past 2 years. And I've achieved and can do alot more than my friend who has been playing 6 years. Thats because he hasnt put the effort and time into it.

just look at the guitarists in like everysingle nu metal band in the world.. the guy with longhair is always the lead and a crazy shredder and the one with the short is always the rythem player.. long hair must be the key!.. and once u have long hair the skill never leaves.. my example is petrucci.. he once had long hair.. but after he cut it.. his skill stayed the same.. but also he practices for 64 hours a day.. so.. it is number of hours biggrin.gif
