i posted this on nemanja's page but i figured i could use as much help as i can get.

i'm trying to write some punk stuff, but i cannot get a good sounding vocal for the life of me. i recorded a riff and tried to improvise a vocal track on it (lyrics come last for me). pardon the poor production and the ear-splitting improv.

some things i noticed that aren't up to par:

-intonation (the worst offender)
-tone/singing technique
-phrasing
-recording techique (even when i sing on pitch it sounds like someone talking over a rock song)

i'm feeling completely overwhelmed and i have no idea how to start sounding good. =/

can anyone help me?

you should mix the vocals louder in the lyrics, I could barely hear it.

One problem most vocalists have is that they hate their own voice, get over that.

GMC has some great singing lessons, you should check those out and really practice them and be very critical.

hearing your own voice on a recording can really cause a big mental block, because when we hear ourselves on tape our voice seems to sound so different compared to when we speak, because obviously the resonating of our voice in our body is not there anymore. About this, well... get used to it, this is how your voice sounds for anybody else wink.gif About intonation, timing, phrasing and all those things, practice will for sure improve your skills.

I haven't heard the clip yet, but the mental thing about hating your own voice is true. It's like how most people don't like photos of themselves either.

You need to work on singing lessons here at GMC! Good start is proper breathing and going through scales. Also this recording is pretty bad...You need to record stronger vocal signal , possibly use some compression too..Bad vocal mix in a song can make it appear much more weak than it is (voice).Just take it slowly and go through lessons...

Hey!

Well, I heard you song and there are many problems ...

1- you are singing out of pitch

This could be for many things : you are not hearing your song while you are singing or you are not hearing you voice while your song is playing, So there are no connection OR...

You are singing in other register that isn't confortable for your voice . I noticed that you are sining in a loud register, and if you try to sing your song in an octave higher, you'll find the difference.

2- The mix of the song is not a good one

I can hear that the mix isn't clear. Imagine that you must to show your song to somebody else, and this person needs to define each instrument clearly.

Send me the song in a MP3 format and i'll singing for you, If you want ...

If you have the lyric, send it to me too.

and if you want to sing, you have to take some singing lesson, just like with other instrument.

Hope it helps

Luciana

It's true that is difficult to find someone that likes his/her voice when he/her listen to the recording of it. But I think is a problem that can be solved with good practice. If you never took singing lessons the problem is you don't know how to manage your voice and your tone. Listen to the classical singers for example. They didn't born with the kind of tone you hear in the records, they had to practice a lot to get the kind of volume and to modify the tone to get that warm sounding. There are various techniques, the most known for classical singers is the Italian one.
So I recommend that you have patience and study how to manage your voice in a way you get more comfortable with yourself. The voice is the one instrument you cannot change, you have a defined registre and tone but you can adjust those parameters and study to get them like you.
I hope you find this usefull.
