Steve Vai, George lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani, David Gilmour.. They all rank up top on my list. My favourite would have to be Vai, no one can mimick his sound..

Yngwie is the only real shredder in my oppinion. All those copies out there will never sound anything like him

No. Wrong. And It's LSD, not LCD.

I think "best guitarist" threads should be banned.

You hit the nail on the head, or just change the name of the threads to "favorite guitarist".

Actually, Brainlesswonder ranked significantly farther back in the Rolling Stone Guitarists issue than Jack White and Zoot Horn Rollo...... laugh.gif

I think "greatest" or "best" are loose terms because your limiting choice. You can't choose just one because not every guitarist plays the same style of music. You'd almost have to set catagories and even then it would be limited. To me if your going to talk greatest or best you have to look at who inspired some of the greats. I mean with out say Muddy Waters or BB King you may never have had a Page, Clapton, Hendrix or Beck. And if you never had them there would probably be no Wylde, Morello, Slash or Van Halen. Everyone is going to have their favorites that they think are the best, but it's only a personal opinion. Mine would be Tom Morello because he can get some very un-guitar sounds out of a guitar which is just amazing.

David Gilmour.
I just love his phrasing.
Simle licks but played with such a feeling.

With so many very, very good guitar players out there that it becomes a taste or preference thing.

What sounds pleasing or good to my ears my not have the same joys for you.

In case nobody here has figured it out yet by my lesson requests, Alex Lifeson is my favorite guitar player along with Randy Rhoads. But that's just me.

Take for instance. probably one of the BEST pure guitar players I have ever seen and I have seen alot, Is a guy by the name of Roy Clark from an old TV comedy show called Hee Haw.

I think he is a country/banjo player but I watched this guy play a classical guitar at a music store in Boston once and I could not believe what this guy was playing. It made Malmsteen or even Al D's Land of the Midnight sun look like childs play. OMFG he was just wailing on a classical guitar.

Sorry for the rant, but I'll cheer for anyone who makes music regardless of style, speed or dexterity
even if I dont care for personally....
just my 2 cents..

BTW LIFESON RULES... laugh.gif

I think I'm going to be different here. I don't think he was the most famous, played the fast, or the best...but I believe he definitely had the most knowledge, and could play flamenco that could melt anyone's heart.

Andrés Segovia.

Another, who I believe innovated the guitar...so that most of the famous artists (Vai, Satriani, Fripp, Zappa, Van Halen)...ALL OF THEM...were influenced by their predecessors up the continous pyramid...who's at the top?

In my opinion, Django Reinhardt.

The all-time innovator, of course, this is just my opinion. smile.gif

im saying kirk hammet... i really like the use of wah pedals and pure speed in alot of his solos. i also agree with dogman.. Roy Clark is GODLY on guitar, alot of other instruments as well. piano violin banjo anything he picked up he could play at above average levels.

This question often results in flame wars on youtube lol!!! Personaly i dont think there is a "best guitarist". As music is all about personal prefrence. I like Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai Currently, but then on a massively different scale I like the Edge from U2 for his great rythm technique. Personally I think Paul Gilberts one of the worlds masters of Guitar but then theres thousands of others with there faves so its good we all have our own faves! cool.gif
