Hi Gerardo,

Not a passage question, havn't got that far yet but wanted to know what's the best and easiest way to lay the pick down. I love acoustic guitar but only play with a pick. I've watched some of your lessons and have tried fingerpicking but my fingers are not picking up the signal from my brain. laugh.gif Any advice would be great!

Glad to see you open this thread btw! smile.gif

I can't seem to find a good rule as to which fingers should be where when they're not being used, and which fingers to use when. is some kind of ring-middle-index pattern with the thumb playing the bassiest notes a good rule? At the moment when I fingerpick I tend to just do a kind of alternate picking adaption using my thumb and index, it works fairly well but I don't think it's correct.

It is kind of difficult to get an even tone from Thumb and Index. When I´m not using my fingers I let them stay toguether as if I were grabbing a tube. A nice aproach when using thumg for bass is letting rest your unused fingers lightly and ready to play on the first three strings: Index on 3rd, Medium on 2nd and Ring on 1st string, thst way you are resing the weight of your arm.
As a rule for slow passage you could use ring finger on 1st string, medium finger on 2nd and index in third. If two or more notes are beeing played on a string, I recomend using index-medium or index-ring, don´t use medium-ring because they share the same tendon (the whole idea is that one finger is playing the other is resting). You should place your hand so you can reach the string confortably with those fingers.
For further information next time I´m recording a lesson I will upload some video excercises.
If you want to spend some bucks go for Williams Kanengiser´s Efortlessly Classical guitar DVD, has a very graphical explanation.

hey Gerardo. I am currently starting to learn how to alternate pick the same string with my fingers while playing arpeggios with my thumb on the lower strings. But mine is never fluid. I try to play with a metronome but my technique is not coming in. How should I be learning this technique?

If you using pick and acoustic guitar, use a flat angle of the pick in relation to the string, also use reststroke it will give you a better tone as you pull the string into the sundhole beforereleasing. A restroke means that I play a string and my pick goes and rest against the next adjacent string, ussually you´ll have to fixate your wrist to keep the same angle and use the force of the whole arm, make sure you are not getting to tense while doing it. I will upload some video of it as soon I start recording my next lesson.

i am using my fingers...I dont have a video recorder or nething but my problem is coming from the Malguena lesson from Ben Nisembalt *spelling* for example. on the high e string, it says to pick the string with ur index and middle finger while the thumb is plucking the g and b strings. But I cannot seem to get the time right becuase, I hit the string with my thumb, pause to get my i and m fingers on the high e string and strike it twice and then the thumb aain. The lesson should show u wut I am trying to explaing. I want to learn this so I can hopefully become a bteer classical player. Neway I have been practicing this for 2 weeks and still cant get it right and need some tips on how to increase my tremelo finger picking ability?

I meant tremelo fingerpicking...sorry biggrin.gif

Play your thumb on third, then play the 1rst with index ussing stacatto, this means you short the note by dampening, the finger you will use for damping will be medium or ring to your liking.
This is the order: place the thumb and index in position, play thumb, play index dump with medium or ring (it is damp and preparation) play with the dumping finger, as soon this finger plays place your thumb again in position and play it. This is calling "planting". I will upload some short video on plating soon.
