Definitely go for the EMG's. For heavy sounds they turn any guitar into a weapon and also clean they sound awesome. I use EMG 81 in 4 of my guitars and they are my fave pickups.

mmm I think is a bit risky to put both pickups, active and passive... maybe if you have 3 pickups you can put a pasive in the middle but a passive in neck and active in bridge IMHO is a bad option. When I play a solo I use bridge for legato and tapping and neck for picking and sweep, so I need two similar pickups if I want to change them while I play a solo.

It's my particular case, just think it carefully before doing anything.

Yeah, I think that would be a little over my head to have one passive and one active, but it sounds interesting biggrin.gif

So you like the clean setting on EMGs? Comparing to passive, do you notice much of a difference, would I be missing out on something?

It's too bad I can't try it out for a week before I buy...

I would have to agree with most here, the EMG's are great for heavier stuff.

Myself personally i like passive pickups, its not that i dislike EMG's it is just that when i play i like to hear what my fingers are doing. EMG's all you hear is the pickup imo.

Its all in the listener though i suppose. I just always felt i could be more expressive with passive pickups. And not "High gain" pickups either like the Seymour super distortion or the Dimbebag Seymour.

I have always been fond though of the George Lynch Screamin demon pup....it has more growl and less bite than most pickups of that type.

I don't miss anything when I play clean stuff with my EMG's. Actually I prefer my EMG's for clean parts over my Gibson Pickups (thats actually the only pickups I am using, either EMG 81 or various Gibsons).

UPDATE: A great deal on an ESP EC-1000 with Passive Pickups came up on ebay that I couldn't let pass by. After much research and all of the great advice, I was leaning a little more toward them anyway. I still would like to get some EMGs someday, and I guess I could slap some into my Ibanez JS... but will probably sell it to pay for the new stuff. Thanks again smile.gif
