Tuners come in many shapes and sizes man. They also vary a bit in price. I would go for one with a built in metronome. Heres a neat model from Korg.....

you can by a guitar tunner i prefer from boss also you have a soft ware tunner you can plug your guitar to pc spound card and tune your guitar

I use korg gt-12 tuner ! But anyone will do the job fine! See in the guitar store which one they have...You don't have to pay a lot for it to do the job fine..
One more thing Greg , don't feel embarrassed asking this question!! We are all beginners at one point , and I remember not knowing how to tune a guitar back in the days when I was starting..I didn't know about which tones open strings need to produce, reference points etc...So its a good question!
