Don't go by what SRV said! He was a freak of nature and had incredibly strong hands and fingers. He used 13-56's!!!!! They were like playing bridge cables! I use 10's on my strat and 09's on my Ibanez.

I've used 010-046 for a while, but I changed to 009-046 today just to try it out, and my first impression is that it feels like bending overboiled spagetthi or something, but I'm going to give it some time, it might be good. I just like to have some kind of resistance when I bend, idk.

I think I have a little too much input now. blink.gif
I'm just going to get some 10s and 9s and see how that works. But strings are kind of hard to test side by side unless you're using the same guitar. I think that if I tried, say, 10s now, but I got better on them, and then in a few weeks when I change strings get some 9s, my playing might have improved enough that I don't notice the difference in their playability. I don't know, I'll just try it I suppose. Their's too much opinion in this. Hmm. I'll think about it.

After four weeks playing 10s you should notice the change in tone when you switch back to 9s.
The other day I played a friend's guitar with 8s and I felt like I was picking spaghetti. 9s and 10s are not that different, but you notice it in the bendings and the sustain.

This might be a good insight I dont know smile.gif

For the past 6 months, I have used nothing but 12-52 guage strings. Today, I set up my guitar to take 9 guage strings again. After months and months of striving to play decent on 12s, I finally developed a tremendous tone on my vibrato. Bending vibrators are such a free thing now, and its just a gorgeous way to play. I love it. Practicing on 12' really pay off.

I would say 10-46 set is a "golden middle" one. This one is also often labeled as "light" gauge. In the end it is all down to personal taste and feel. Even some same gauge sets but different brands have different fell to it, more tension, less tension etc.
If you are unsure what to do, the best way is to experiment will all of them until you settle on one that suits you the most.

I definitely think that 9 is a middle, not 10.

Well, that's a bit misleading. One can adapt to anything.

As Muris already said, there is no right or wrong string gauge, it all depends on what you like. SRV played 13-56, while Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top play 07-I don't know what, VERY thin strings. And I guess we can say that both sound great wink.gif
The points Muris mentioned in the beginning are absolutely right, thinner strings make bends easier of course, but thicker strings deliver a richer and fatter tone, ane more sustain, try some different gauges and you will find out what you like most.

SRV was insane, I tested a guitar with 0.012 strings and it was hard as hell for me to do bends with vibrato, 0.010 are comfortable, 0.009 already feels to loose for my taste, I believe this is one thing that greatly depends on the size and shape of your hands, look at SRV's fingers, he might have broken a 0.009 just by looking at it too much, he had big strong hands.

If I could play with thicker gauge than 0.010 I would, because the more tension the better I can Alternate pick, I do not know why. Is there an explanation to that?

Not sure, but I think it also depends on the way one play?

I actually do alternate pick faster on .009 than .010... For me, less tension makes me faster.

I also prefer more tension, thats why I play this mixed set, 10-52, like this I can still comfortably do bends in leads, but for fast rhythm play the strings are not too sloppy.

There is no best gauge, only what you prefer most.
But things are like this,
with thin strings you get less tension which means legato, fretting
and eventually bending might be easier,
concerns are less sustain and less tone, compared to thick strings.
With thick strings the idea is opposite, more tone and sustain(maybe SRV)
but also more tension, probably harder to play legato and stuff like that.

Lets say "normal" gauge is 009,
008 is probably thin and 010 and above is thick.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

Hi there Muris !
I quite agree with you. But may I ask you what gauge you're using on that nice guitar you've got (what brend is it by the way) ? I have got 9's on my strat and I feel a bit short when trying to bend up one full tone (for example from C to D). By "short", I mean that, let's say I'm bending the B-string, then I've also to move up the G-string a bit otherwise it's not enough to reach the correct note. So that sometimes I let myself "cheat" and start the bend in the upper fret so that there's only an half tone left to bend. But the overall feeling is not the same.
My Les Paul Traditional has come with Gibson 10's. Bending is faster there (ie it takes less space) but harder indeed because of the higher tension as you already mentioned. It would be nice to have that fast bending of the 10's but with that comfortable 9's tension ! Hmm, probably I'm splitting hairs here and better first improve my basic technique... tongue.gif

I use 10's for the top 3 strings(thickest), and 9's for the bottom 3(thinest). It means I have to buy 2 packets of strings if i want to change them all - but usually i keep the top 3 alot longer than the 9's.

The reason i do this is because i HATE the tone 9's give for the thick strings. Like, usually you do power chords and stuff like that on those strings - and i hate how that sounds with 9's, that is why i use 10's for those 3. And obviously 9's for the thin strings as its easier to bend and i don't think theres as much of a tone differance between the 10's and 9's for those strings. Also for long playing and alot of bending, my fingers last longer biggrin.gif

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but there are special packets of strings actually a mix between 9's and 10's at about same price. See this link : http://www.thomann.de/fr/ernie_ball_2222.htm
It would spare you to buy each time an extra packet of strings ... Take care ! cool.gif
