I think I have a little too much input now.
I'm just going to get some 10s and 9s and see how that works. But strings are kind of hard to test side by side unless you're using the same guitar. I think that if I tried, say, 10s now, but I got better on them, and then in a few weeks when I change strings get some 9s, my playing might have improved enough that I don't notice the difference in their playability. I don't know, I'll just try it I suppose. Their's too much opinion in this. Hmm. I'll think about it. -------------------- I spelled my username wrong...I didn't even think that was possible!
Look at the topic for my guitar... Finished Guitar Build Gear: Homemade strat (You still need to look at its topic!) Squier strat (probably going to get rid of it and get another guitar instead) :) Line 6 spider amp (not actually used for anything, just acts as a speaker) Digitech Gnx2 (kind of old, but cheap, and sounds amazing!) |

After four weeks playing 10s you should notice the change in tone when you switch back to 9s.
The other day I played a friend's guitar with 8s and I felt like I was picking spaghetti. 9s and 10s are not that different, but you notice it in the bendings and the sustain. -------------------- Guitars:

As Muris already said, there is no right or wrong string gauge, it all depends on what you like. SRV played 13-56, while Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top play 07-I don't know what, VERY thin strings. And I guess we can say that both sound great
The points Muris mentioned in the beginning are absolutely right, thinner strings make bends easier of course, but thicker strings deliver a richer and fatter tone, ane more sustain, try some different gauges and you will find out what you like most. -------------------- Guitars: various Gibson Les Pauls / Gibson J 45

SRV was insane, I tested a guitar with 0.012 strings and it was hard as hell for me to do bends with vibrato, 0.010 are comfortable, 0.009 already feels to loose for my taste, I believe this is one thing that greatly depends on the size and shape of your hands, look at SRV's fingers, he might have broken a 0.009 just by looking at it too much, he had big strong hands. If I could play with thicker gauge than 0.010 I would, because the more tension the better I can Alternate pick, I do not know why. Is there an explanation to that? Not sure, but I think it also depends on the way one play? I actually do alternate pick faster on .009 than .010... For me, less tension makes me faster. I also prefer more tension, thats why I play this mixed set, 10-52, like this I can still comfortably do bends in leads, but for fast rhythm play the strings are not too sloppy.

I use 10's for the top 3 strings(thickest), and 9's for the bottom 3(thinest). It means I have to buy 2 packets of strings if i want to change them all - but usually i keep the top 3 alot longer than the 9's. The reason i do this is because i HATE the tone 9's give for the thick strings. Like, usually you do power chords and stuff like that on those strings - and i hate how that sounds with 9's, that is why i use 10's for those 3. And obviously 9's for the thin strings as its easier to bend and i don't think theres as much of a tone differance between the 10's and 9's for those strings. Also for long playing and alot of bending, my fingers last longer Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but there are special packets of strings actually a mix between 9's and 10's at about same price. See this link : http://www.thomann.de/fr/ernie_ball_2222.htm It would spare you to buy each time an extra packet of strings ... Take care ! Raphaël |
