Can you upload a video of yourself playing over a CD you bought? I've never put anything on YouTube before.

What about the GMC uploads page, can you upload a file of you adding a solo to a song from a CD?

Of course you can. You can upload anything. But I guess you are concerned about copyright issues.

To tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea, but I have seen a LOT (A WHOLE LOT) of videos where people play guitar over the original song, and their videos are still online.

I would honestly say (from past issues) that GMC inforce the copyright issues more or harder than youtube apparently do, or perhaps this is just a grey area that no-one really knows what to do.

The best you could do is find a backing track, but if that is not an option, i dont think that youtube will sue you or anything. At the very least you will get a warning before hand (or just the video removed), but i think that is very unlikely.

Upload whatever you want to youtube, that's not a concern of GMC. We're checking links though but you playing over a CD at youtube isn't anything we'll frown upon.

I don't think it's a good idea to put the original recording here spite you playing over it and the suspected low quality (laugh.gif hold on for just a sec) of the background music I still belive it's enough to violate copyright rules.
Rather pick a free backingtrack like Zion suggested if you're posting it here.

Maria or Kris have to correct me on this since they are likely to know exactly what goes and what doesn't in regards to © but until then.

YT is the land of copyright infringements, so yes you can do it there, but I don't think you should do it. Instead try to record or make you own backing - you will see that you will learn a lto about the song you are doing and have a lot of fun along the way as well wink.gif

+1 that's a great idea!
It's very fun and at the same time you're learning a lot. It's also very rewarding to make the backing yourself smile.gif

A great idea for sure, if what you seek is a backing track. This was more along the lines of drawing your own illustrations for a book you were inspired by. In this case, a field recording, set up on the edge of a canyon. But I'm not going to put it on yootube, the quality would be so poor as to lose all the sublety of the setting and the music.
