When I need to make my drums sound different than any factory preset available I do some proper production moves. First I find the best midi sample for my snare drum and make it as dry as possible. If the sample itself has some room reverb when originaly sampled, you can not remove that but a little is not a problem. After that I convert that midi snare track into audio track. Then I can EQ my snare the way I do with any audio track and use any other reverb available for audio processing. I like to use gated reverb for snare. The same principle works for every other drum component except cymbals.
About guitar, you have to experiment. Sustain comes from many factors. Where you stand in front of the amp, what type of distortion you use, what pickups you have. Always record dry and add effects during mixing. Everything is important for the guitar sound like what pickup position you chose, what amp, what speaker... The best distortion for me is the one coming from the amp. I don't really like pedals. Yes, the idea is to treat EZD as if it were a real drum kit and use all the tricks that the pros use. For starters, pull all the outputs separately into cubase so you can put effects on each drum (its been a while since I used Cubase so I can't remember if this is automatic or not). Play with the levels, add compression, change the reverb settings, add extra reverb to the snare, etc etc. - if your ears are good enough to spot that you need something extra, then you should have the ability to tweak it to your liking!
It also might just be that the EZD kit doens't suit the sound you are looking for - EZD has expansion packs for different kits, and Muris uses a different package - addictive drums. I prefer EZD myself, but Muris always seems to get AD to sound awesome! Finally, there are some higher end drum packages available - I just bought Toontracks Superior 2.0 - that has so many tweakability options its completely unbelievable! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
