As it should be?

Are you serious?

Then why don't we all just put a bullet in our head when after blow out the candles on our 30th birthday.

Giving up on your dream is a personal choice. It's not right for everyone. And in my humble opinion, its certainly not "as it should be".

ahh I see Micke cleared that up a little, I read it the same as he did, I think Frank meant that once children, family etc come along they are the number one priority in your life, they are the ones that come first, if your not making enough money to provide for them then you have to seek alternatives, thats life I`m afraid, it doesnt mean you have to give up.

I`ve never given up "the dream" of what I love doing the most, but unfortunatly you have to be realistic, as a single unit I`ve never been good enough to make a living out of playing guitar, in a band? well thats different, in my late teens and early twenties we tried incredibly hard to reach a level that would enable us to give up our days jobs and make a living out of what we loved the most, later in life now we realised that we didnt actually try hard enough, although it felt like it at the time! Its a constant game of lies and banging your head against a brick wall, theres a huge element of luck involved as well.

To be honest, our band reformed about a year ago after some 10 years or so, we all really enjoy meeting up & bashing out some numbers, its actually far more enjoyable than it ever used to be, now theres no pressure, no super high expectations, and are actually sitting down and writing an album to record purely for our own enjoyment, to me thats mroe important than the rich and famous part, enjoyment smile.gif

Rich? nah not by a long shot lol, famous? In my own mind maybe.

But for me its not about those things, i do make my living with music, i teach during the day, i have done clinics for local schools. And also do some session work when it comes my way (not nearly enough).

I make enough to get by, and thats all that matters to me. I would definately have to rethink my priorities if i couldnt support myself. Sometimes money gets a little tight, but not enough to keep me awake at night.

I did the 9 to 5 thing, went to school. Got a degree in computer science, and after entering the workforce realized i was absolutely miserable. I would rather have peace of mind than money. So here i am.

Daniel

Wise words from Daniel Sensei, yet again ^^

I'd rather choose a lower paid job I liked, then making boatloads of money while working with something I get mentally sick of...

I'm guessing you are younger than 30? We have the advantage of having been young (and thinking those exact thoughts) and now being older so we see it from both sides wink.gif

"As it should be" to me means that at some stage in your life you are faced with a choice - if you choose family then you should do your best at it - it becomes your new dream, and a rewarding dream it can be too. To try and have a family and also keep the life of a homeless vagabond is selling both dreams short - you won't be there for your family, and you won't be giving your career your full attention as you sit there on the lonely road missing your wife & kids.

Some people choose differently to others - most make the choice of a family and the responsibilities that entails - that's a choice I respect just as much as following your dreams to become a famous musician - neither path is easy, both can take all that you have and all that you are, so mixing them is not a smart thing to do.

However, with a family in tow, as Micke and Smells have both said, there is still a heck of a lot of enjoyment to be had out of music. When it isn't a burning ambition it becomes a familiar friend, a source of temporary escape and relaxation - so it's all good smile.gif

I'm 36 next month. Have a wife and 4 year old daughter.

You can still be in a band and practice a couple/three nights a week. Gig on the weekends. And be a devoted husband/father.

I've seen this happen to friends, as soon as a kid comes along they give up on EVERYTHING else. I don't get it. I'm a great dad. And my daughter and wife would agree. They don't expect their existence to be the end of my hobbies. I still make time for myself. And I still make time for them. There is a LOT more time in the given week than people think there is.

To me its not a lot different than other jobs. If you want to have the best chance at climbing the ladder you may want to relocate. You may need to put in some extra time here and there to "get ahead". But with your band you hopefully have 3-4 other people helping out.

Your family can be a part of your musical hobby/career. The kids/wife can come to the gigs. They can help out. They can sell merch. They can hump gear. Like the dad who's the softball coach.

Isn't that a heck of a lot better than the guys/gals knocking out 50-70 hour weeks at the office, not seeing their kids nearly enough, are watching their marriage fall apart cuz they have no time for their spouse, all they do is work? What a horrible misappropriation of time/effort. Guess what man? You're gonna be dead before you take time to enjoy yourself.

If you want it. You can have it. A successful father/child relationship. A successful wife/husband relationship. A successful musical career. It may be more work at times than the single dude with no kids that neednt keep a job cuz he can just crash at a buddies house. But its certainly possible.

I think for some, the stuff we associate with "growing up" is a great excuse for not putting in the effort to get where you want to be.

It's real easy to blame your kids/wife. Thats BS. Turn the TV off and get your band going if thats what you want. You dont need 13 NFL games every Sunday. You don't need to spend 5 hours pruning the yard every weekend. Jam in the garage and book a gig at the local bar. Get it started. Or admit that you really just dont want to put in the effort.

Sitting on the couch is a lot easier.

(of course this is my opinion and I'm speaking in generalities, not to anyone specifically here)

I am 34 with a wife, 2 year old daughter and a second on the way. I have a school loan, mortgage and bills like the next person.

My wife understand and fully supports my need to play. I am in 2 bands and make time for both. The other guitar player in my band has 3 daughters, married and works 50+ hours a week. I am a senior level technician/network admin at my job and work 40+ hours a week.

I am grateful that my wife fully supports my hobbies and takes on the tasks when Im not there. I think Im a great dad as well and makes time for everything.

I tend to side with Jer here. I do not watch mindless football or TV shows on a daily basis other than an occasional movie. I do not sit on the couch. Im a very active person and feel my time is wasted if im not learning something.

I too seen a lot of friend give up on their dreams too when a family is born. Im not looking ot have a succesful music career but it would be nice.

I think my point is if you love what your doing you will make time for it.

Again, My opinion and do understand everyones circumstances are different. smile.gif

I'm not saying anyone who watches TV or Football is an idiot. Don't get me wrong.

We've all seen the guy who says he doesnt have time for _____ and blames his wife and kids for it. Yet he's got time to play pool, compete in dart tournaments, work on restoring a car, watch sports, etc......

If you want it, you gotta put in the time. And the time is there. Decide whats important, and get to it.

I just refuse to accept the attitude that its not possible.

Absolutely! I think its a matter of degree, but I think you are now actually agreeing with Frank's original point ... What you are describing above is the same sort of approach that Micke and Smells were advocating - music still has a very important place in your life, and rightly so, but it isn't your entire life, again, rightly so. Seems like you have achieved a good balance and I'm happy for you ... I think from your original "Rightly So" post we all got the impression that you were advocating a monk-like existence in which you persued your dream to the exclusion of everything else - friends, family, nothing else mattered apart from getting that break and becoming famous. What you described above is a little different to that and I wholeheartedy agree that you can make time for anything you think is important - I spend most of my spare time working om various GMC projects, I rarely if ever witch TV!

Ahh, yeah there was a bit of a misunderstanding there then. Yeah, if all you want out of life is to be rich and famous thru music you have zero business getting married and/or having kids.

There are a lot of people who do seem to act like their personal life ended when they had a son/daughter.

How sad is that?

I do think its a cop-out for many people too.

"Hey Jer, how come you arent a better guitar player?" - Cuz I'm not putting in enough practice time to be any better. I'm not trying hard enough.

"Hey Jer, why arent you in a band as your job?" - Cuz I chose not to pursue that method of employment.

It's got nothing to do with my wife/child. They aren't roadblocks. They are a support system. Where you go with your musical endeavors is purely the outcome of your efforts.

The post I replied to, to me sounded like its impossible to pursue your dream once you "grow up". To me, thats rubbish.

Dear GMC,

I just want to thank you for actually having a great site where people can express thoughts and opinions and not turn into a total flame war.

Another great reason why I have been loving GMC. The people here are extrodinary! Especially smells. Hows the mentoring picks coming? smile.gif

I watch TV shows and have an unlimited card at my local cinema. I am only 24 but I love seeing movies and me and all my mates have unlimited cards and go on Sunday every week to see 3 films. I go to every Middlesbrough match with other groups of friends. I take my interests into my social life. You see your friends and all have a great time. smile.gif

Sad indeed and I have never understood it (although I don't have kids). A lot of my friends got to their mid 30s, started having kids and stopped talking to anyone other than other people with kids - I lost a lot of friends that way. You have to keep some balance in your life!

We have worked hard to keep it that way, that's why we start to get "hands on" in threads where people start to get heated - to be honest though, even without us doing anything, GMC is a pretty well behaved bunch of sensible and interesting people - and we aim to keep it that way!

On the other hand, the Internet has made it possible for many previous unknowns to become "somewhat knowns" and every little bit helps. We have several instructors here who have CDs for sale, and I think that's great. This topic is about rich and famous, and I think you can be one without the other. Of my favorite groups, I'd hate to see them go "mainstream," because very few real Artists can withstand the pressures of commercial success.

I agree, internet does help small bands that otherwise couldn't be heard, but becoming "rich and famous" is a whole different story, which most wonderful, skilled players won't ever achieve. My previous post concerns were that it's sad that there are so many "rich & famous" bands (at least in my country) which in my opinion don't deserve it at all. Music is an industry and it sometimes promotes stupid things just to make cash fast and forget it all two years down the road.

Then you have found your path to happiness Daniel, what more can you ask for? Well done smile.gif

By the way there was some really interesting debate in this thread, very insightful, great discussion.

QUOTE (jer @ Oct 1 2008, 10:23 PM) *
As it should be?

Are you serious?

Then why don't we all just put a bullet in our head when after blow out the candles on our 30th birthday.

Giving up on your dream is a personal choice. It's not right for everyone. And in my humble opinion, its certainly not "as it should be".

Jer I love that quote and hope to live by it. (I'm 22 haha)

I am "richness-challenged" as well.

Famous?

I'm not famous at all, and most of the time just want to be left alone by the majority of the people that I share this earth with.

So fame probably isn't for me.

I'd like a few extra bucks though. So I could quit this job that does nothing but eat up 8 hours of my day.
