Wise words from Daniel Sensei, yet again ^^
I'd rather choose a lower paid job I liked, then making boatloads of money while working with something I get mentally sick of... -------------------- GMC is not just a website... It's a lifestyle!

As it should be? Are you serious? Then why don't we all just put a bullet in our head when after blow out the candles on our 30th birthday. Giving up on your dream is a personal choice. It's not right for everyone. And in my humble opinion, its certainly not "as it should be". I'm guessing you are younger than 30? We have the advantage of having been young (and thinking those exact thoughts) and now being older so we see it from both sides "As it should be" to me means that at some stage in your life you are faced with a choice - if you choose family then you should do your best at it - it becomes your new dream, and a rewarding dream it can be too. To try and have a family and also keep the life of a homeless vagabond is selling both dreams short - you won't be there for your family, and you won't be giving your career your full attention as you sit there on the lonely road missing your wife & kids. Some people choose differently to others - most make the choice of a family and the responsibilities that entails - that's a choice I respect just as much as following your dreams to become a famous musician - neither path is easy, both can take all that you have and all that you are, so mixing them is not a smart thing to do. However, with a family in tow, as Micke and Smells have both said, there is still a heck of a lot of enjoyment to be had out of music. When it isn't a burning ambition it becomes a familiar friend, a source of temporary escape and relaxation - so it's all good -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

I'm 36 next month. Have a wife and 4 year old daughter. You can still be in a band and practice a couple/three nights a week. Gig on the weekends. And be a devoted husband/father. Absolutely! I think its a matter of degree, but I think you are now actually agreeing with Frank's original point ... What you are describing above is the same sort of approach that Micke and Smells were advocating - music still has a very important place in your life, and rightly so, but it isn't your entire life, again, rightly so. Seems like you have achieved a good balance and I'm happy for you ... I think from your original "Rightly So" post we all got the impression that you were advocating a monk-like existence in which you persued your dream to the exclusion of everything else - friends, family, nothing else mattered apart from getting that break and becoming famous. What you described above is a little different to that and I wholeheartedy agree that you can make time for anything you think is important - I spend most of my spare time working om various GMC projects, I rarely if ever witch TV! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

There are a lot of people who do seem to act like their personal life ended when they had a son/daughter. How sad is that? Sad indeed and I have never understood it (although I don't have kids). A lot of my friends got to their mid 30s, started having kids and stopped talking to anyone other than other people with kids - I lost a lot of friends that way. You have to keep some balance in your life! Dear GMC, I just want to thank you for actually having a great site where people can express thoughts and opinions and not turn into a total flame war. Another great reason why I have been loving GMC. The people here are extrodinary! Especially smells. Hows the mentoring picks coming? Dan We have worked hard to keep it that way, that's why we start to get "hands on" in threads where people start to get heated - to be honest though, even without us doing anything, GMC is a pretty well behaved bunch of sensible and interesting people - and we aim to keep it that way! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

On the other hand, the Internet has made it possible for many previous unknowns to become "somewhat knowns" and every little bit helps. We have several instructors here who have CDs for sale, and I think that's great. This topic is about rich and famous, and I think you can be one without the other. Of my favorite groups, I'd hate to see them go "mainstream," because very few real Artists can withstand the pressures of commercial success. I agree, internet does help small bands that otherwise couldn't be heard, but becoming "rich and famous" is a whole different story, which most wonderful, skilled players won't ever achieve. My previous post concerns were that it's sad that there are so many "rich & famous" bands (at least in my country) which in my opinion don't deserve it at all. Music is an industry and it sometimes promotes stupid things just to make cash fast and forget it all two years down the road. I did the 9 to 5 thing, went to school. Got a degree in computer science, and after entering the workforce realized i was absolutely miserable. I would rather have peace of mind than money. So here i am. Then you have found your path to happiness Daniel, what more can you ask for? Well done By the way there was some really interesting debate in this thread, very insightful, great discussion. -------------------- Guitars:
